Is there any way to tell whether the Maltodextrin I buy at the brew shop is corn starch or a longer chain version or do I need a drug lab to do that?

It's very cheap - $4 per kg if I remember correctly.

corn starch doesn't determine whether it is maltodextrin.
the number of D-glucose units linked by alpha bonds does.

You want to find out what the DE number is (dextrose equivalent).
It should be between 5 and 20.

further, the product should be specifically called maltodextrin, not corn starch.
I went to 3 home brew shops and none of them had "maltodextrin".

Hence I bought it from here

He also has a little snippet on the diff between dex and maltdex - they are both fast one is just a little slower than the other.

Quality and clean products is his priority - he is also a cool guy I have called a couple of times and had a chat not sure if it is the done thing or not but he seemed happy enough to chat.

I went to the home brew shop at Annerley on Ipswich road. The label on the bag definately says Maltodextrin. I'll ask the guy next time I go, but I'm not sure he is a chemist.

Hi to all - new to this forum but wanted to share my experience & recipe with Maltodextrin etc.

I buy Maltodextrin & Dextrose in equal quantities from http://nobullsupplements.com.au/ for about $45 for 8KGS (4kg of each) delivered to my door. I then mix this at the ratio of 50g of each/litre of water (giving a total of 100g of carbohydrate) plus 1/4 teaspoon of "diet-rite" salt substitute (for a good source of electrolytes including potassium).
That's the easy part as I struggled for ages to get a decent flavouring in the drink! Who wants to drink slightly sweet, slightly salty water with no flavour? After experimenting with cordial (not bad but made the drink too sweet) & lemon/lime juice (once again, not too bad but be careful not to make the drink acidic!) I hit on FRUIT TEA!
After making up a litre of mix just chuck a tea bag of your choice into the mix and allow to steep for as long as you can (use boiling water if you have the time to let it cool). You end up with a really refreshing, not too sweet, not too salty drink with just a hint of flavour kind of like those spring waters that you can buy with a "twist" of lemon, cranberry, mandarin etc.

One bottle of this mix and one bottle of plain water is good for about a 2-3 hour ride depending on bottle size, air temperature etc and it WILL stop you from bonking!

Yep, I use a mix of Powerade and maltodextrin but yours is pretty good, too, Rhys!

Note that your formula gives you 75g per 2-3 hour ride.

If you were aerobic throughout, you may need that amount per hour after the first 90 or so minutes, depending on body weight!
