Great photos cotterpin and love the prizemoney 3/2/1 Pound, which back in '41 was OK.
Well before my time, but I can relate... can still recall as a junior racing in open competitions for $10
when we had just changed over to new play money... and that was pocket money to me.
Lone Rider- I rode on the long, dark road... before I danced under the lights.

Yer 1966 brings back memories, my first track season as a Sub Junior. I won a 40 cent money order.
Bought a road cap and still had change.
I've got an old 1941 Devonport Carnival program with some impresive names it. I'll post it up over the next week or so.

The guy on the bike. The winner is the first person whose front wheel crosses the transition between black and white of the finish line (i.e. the "back" of the finish line). There are rules for this. Fingers don't count, especially in staged photos.

RAW is starting soon commurider. Are you going to get out on the track?

That's a pity. He looked desperate.

Haven't had the time this year to even think of entering. I thought I could get away with some nights but even my volunteering commitments are falling by the way side because of work. I need a good dose of competitive spirit to get into the groove methinks. It would be a good excuse to get a track bike  but I don't think a leisurely pace around the drome will be welcomed  It is definitely on the list however.

Friday nights. Novice grade. Everyone from first timers to world champions gets a ride.

I've already arranged my schedule so I can be there. When I started my new job I told them I would need to leave early on Fridays. Being cyclists themselves, they understood.

To continue with the thread, here is me beating a small child.

I know this feeling well CommuRider and must say depresses me greatly! :( I had hoped to be able too get back to racing this year or early next year but alas driving trucks and being away from home all week, stopped any hope of this happening. :|

Unfortunately for me, there is no in between with cycling. I'm either 100% or nothing at all a far as competing goes, I'm just too competitive by nature to do it half arsed.

Yeah, I don't want to do it half-arsed either and getting beaten repeatedly won't do well for my ego either. At least I'm still cycle-commuting though it is down to 2 days now as opposed to last year when I was doing 4-5 days :|

Bfv, the poor kid...you ain't building his confidence! Le pauvre! My son loves to beat me when we're cycling around SOP...he gets all grumpy and whingy when I cruise downhill and pass him by.

You really need to learn more about racing. These "kids" as you call them keep improving, even on their restricted gears. They get faster than the old slow adults (like me), then they get faster than the alpha-Mammils, then they get old enough to go off the restricted gearing. Then they win gold at the Olympics.

There were several others behind us when we crossed the line. He beat them all - except for me. That was my only win.

I don't feel sorry for these kids at all. I'm looking forward to saying I raced against them when they're on the podium in Paris.

Older tracks tended to have longer straights and tighter bends (hence up and over 50degrees)
Made if fun in a bunch race, as you were in and out of bends so quick, that you quickly lose
which part in the track you are. Which means you must pay special attention to the laps.
Gforces are fun, too... you get pushed down, into the bend, and thrown out of it.
I love the image, thanks for sharing!

Calshot Velodrome, on Calshot Spit built to fit inside an aircraft hangar, has probably
one of the steepest bankings around, today, used for competition Track Cycling.
This velodrome is probably the oldest indoor cycling track in the UK (transported and rebuilt)
... and these blokes are not even racing-video (FME-scratch races can get exciting, to say the least)

So, do you cross the track on the straight to get in and out?
