Padded knicks from Aldis.

Postby tinstaafl » Thu Feb 01, 2007 1:49 pm

G'day forum,
I just bought a couple of pairs of cheap padded knicks from Aldis and boy are they cheap.
I recommend that you don't go anywhere near 'em.
I thought that I could cut the pads out and put them in better shorts but even the pads look like rubbish.
I am returning mine tomorrow and I hope to save anyone here the same problem.

See ya

Robert

For $19, they are good enough for local early morning short-medium distance training rides.

I picked 2 pairs for commuting, where quality isn't as important

Yes, I bought a pair too from their Leichhardt store this afternoon. It's thin but at 20 bucks, it's more than good enough for that morning 20k ride. Not sure I would wear them without underwears as they seemed to be see through material when stretched. Surprised that there's a CoolMax label attached to it.

I went and had a look at the cycling stuff they had to offer. Not this time  Got a coupla nice pair of baggies with padded inserts and some pretty good shirts last year.

Did those knicks really have a centre seam under the chamois?

They do but just on the outside. The chamois is thinish but smooth on the inside. I think it's perfectly fine if you don't sit on your saddle all the time.

I went to have a look after work at the Prahran (VIC) store and most of it was gone believe it or not.

I wanted a pair of gloves and all that was left were two empty packets, which I assumed were stolen. I was almost prepared to be late for work just so I could get a pair. Anyone get them?

All the knicks, jerseys and wind trainers were gone, and there were 2 pairs of padded undies left. No one touched the gel seat covers or the bike stands though.

The gloves weren't very nice. I saw quite a few pairs. The padded areas are pretty hard and thin.

The gel cover wasn't popular at Leichhardt either. It's so heavy!

As for the jersey, I thought the material and construction was even worse than the knicks.

Yeh, I put the jersey back as I didn't like the construction. I did like the design in blue.

Excellent topic!

You guys saved me a lot of heart ache and $$$. I was about to go get a pair of knicks and possibly jersey, but was called away for work (luckily as it seems).

Has anyone bought or tried the padded undies? By the sounds of things maybe you're suppose to wear the undies with the knicks?

A pair of good padded undies though wouldn't go astray in an emergency (ie when you haven't had a chance to do the washing)

I could have a look in Sunbury again. PM me with size/colour preference if you're still interested, but they didn't look or feel like much value.

I think the idea is that you're supposed to wear the padded undies with the knicks, AND use the padded seat cover.

Yeah, I reckon that that would be the only way that it'd work for anyone other than brass monkeys.

Aldis

Postby bigbuzz73 » Fri Feb 02, 2007 8:14 pm

hi guys,
I went to Aldis yesterday and bought a top and a pair of the shy shorts. The jersey is a good cut and comfy. The shorts pinch a little, but for $20, who can complain?

I think you'll find that with a little effort, one can complain at any price. ;)

Aldis? Or do you mean Aldi's the cheap supermarket chain?

Commuted in them on Friday
Conclusions;
1. Poor quality
2. Generous sizing, if you are between sizes, go smaller
3. I'm estimating a short life

If I get away from work quick enough and fix the flat tyre on my road bike in time, I'll be testing the knick on my track bike tonight, which is a lot less confortable to ride than the OCR.

I've been using this cheap Aldi knick for the last few days on my morning rides. I actually find it fairly comfortable apart from the obvious thinner padding. At least it's more comfortable than this Castello I bought from the last Netti sale, which has been giving me skin abrasions on sweaty rides. Maybe there really is something about those Assos and similar knicks.

It's off topic, and a plug, but .... I've been wearing the Supremo Ghia from Uno for the last few weeks. They're a bit long in the leg to be perfect, but they're very comfortable. The 'Ghia' is the one with the orange chamois, which is a lot better than the blue one in the 'club' and 'pro peleton' ranges.
My only experience to date with really cheap knicks has been a pair of, supposedly, Nalini's that I bought on eBay and they've only been worn once (and that was enough).

I've been wanting to get a pair of uno knicks. Know where I can get them at a discount price ?
