The new plans for the intersection upgrade have been released. They show bikelanes but not the best, as they are still only plans something can still be done to improve them.

Samford Wardell Intersection UpgradeI couldn't see any pictures (maybe due to my iPad), just a brief written synopsis. I drive down Samford Rd and Wardell St every day. Unless they reclaim parts of the footpath, I can't see any meaningful bike lanes being introduced anywhere except at the intersections. And really, what's the point of a "bike lane" that exists for ten metres or so before disappearing? The barrier here is the width of the road. There's only so much to work with, without widening the whole thing. I would never ride on Wardell St. I value life too much.

Re: Samford Wardell Intersection Upgrade...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Re: Samford Wardell Intersection Upgrade
I agree in fact when living in Enogerra a few years ago I don't remember seeing a single cyclist on the road..
Re: Samford Wardell Intersection UpgradeI'm moto commuting along Wardell presently and although the road is under repair, I'm actually finding it not too bad. However the only cycling I see is by cyclists on the footpaths, I figure that is due to the roadworks mainly, but when finished I doubt many would use the road anyway as it is frankly I consider too dangerous for vulnerable road users due to the non vulnerable road users being total prats.
as for the road upgrade, I remember during the election campaign, the former member for my electorate tried to gain mileage by saying the current government was going to cancel the roadworks. I sent back a reply saying I hoped they would cancel it and that the road choked up with cars as only then would people hopefully be forced to reassess their use of the motor vehicle. maybe people would begin to use public transport, or god forbid all the parents would stop driving their children to school to the two private schools along that road (my daughter attends one of them and has no problem catching a bus to school). too often they upgrade/build roads only to have them filled immediately to capacity overloading surrounding infrastructure. I know this as one of my friends designs and project manages these road upgrades and he says that about most roads. one of the more recent projects he worked on is already designed to be 4 lanes wide each way (increasing from the current 2 that was just finished). why? because the forecast is that it will need it. what is crazy about this is that no linking road surrounding it has the capacity to adequately feed it, the 4 lanes are so that the feeder roads do not get choked and the 4 lane road is a defacto holding area for the volume of vehicles. Life is not about waiting for the rain to pass.....it's about learning to dance (or ride) in the rain.

Re: Samford Wardell Intersection UpgradeI have to say personally I have never seen anyone riding along Wardell st but I have seen people riding along Samford Rd. Yes both roads are fast and narrow but we can dream that there may be better provisions one day. What I am most disappointed with is the fact that Wardell st has no lanes at the intersection what so ever. Then there is the fact that the bike stop lines on Samford rd finish exactly at the same line as the general traffic.

Re: Samford Wardell Intersection UpgradeWardell's a bit of mess after this weeks rain, I think once the resurfacing has been done it wont be too much worse than coming in on Waterworks, prob a bit busier if anything.
Re: Samford Wardell Intersection UpgradeWardell St is pretty rubbish - terrible surface, narrow lanes, not a lot of fun when I've ridden it. Bombing down the hill inbound is good fun though, and it's not too bad from there on. The section from Samford rd. up to the top of the hill is definitely un-fun. Going the other way up the hill is probably even worse. I wouldn't ride it in peak hour, and it's certainly not my preferred route even on a weekend.
Looking at that pdf those are going to be some skinny arse bikelanes... of a totally un-useful length. Are the "concrete paths" meant to be shared paths?
