Will GreenEDGE help Cadel Evans?

Postby GreyhoundCycle » Sat Jun 30, 2012 11:16 pm

Just a thought, if team GreenEDGE couldn't see themselves having a chance to go for a stage win, will team management decide on the spot to help Cadel wherever and whenever they can?

Maybe if it put them in the spotlight and got the sponsors some camera time, it could happen. They have some strong riders though, i think a stage win is a pretty solid bet.

No... If you read interviews of Aussie cyclists talking about fellow countrymen on other teams, while they will be happy or proud of a successful Aussie, the obligation is to their own team.

No, the additional work & subsequent fatigue could/would be to the detriment of the teams goals in future stages.

No, other teams sponsors pay gazillions of dollars, so country allegiances are out the window.

So the only rare case in which it could occur is if they have mutual benefit. i.e. Breakaway with Cadel and Albenisi ( not likely ).

Short answer: No
Long answer: No

There may be times that what Green Edge is looking to do is also helpful to BMC/Cadel, but that's true of every team in the face

I thought I'd read that Gerry Harvey said that OGE may help Cadel.

It would be great PR if they did so, surely, and that's what matters on the commercial front.

Obviously I'm talking about stages when OGE have no hope themselves.

It could happen. I thought Sammy Sanchez was pretty much a 10th member of Saxo Bank helping Bert last year. With his contract with E.E. finishing I was sure he was going to be with Saxo this year.

You could certainly see a situation where GE and BMC worked to make a win, and GE take the stage win and BMC take the general classification time (ie, both teams get what they most want). It is also in BMC's interest to have Goss contesting Cav at every opportunity.

just my 2c in the past you see Spanish blokes on different teams trying to shut down Italian/ French etc, French trying to shut down Italian/Spanish etc. I think if the situation was there a GE rider would take a few turns on the front or dish out some pain to assist another Aussie rider on another team if there was no competition between the 2 for overall or points. Having said that if the GE team was riding for Goss or Gerro on the day that would be it.
I like to imagine that the Aussies would in the right situation "lend a hand" to another bloke on another team.

Good point on the Spanish cyclists, though even then, if working together would have any negative affect on their own team plan, then they wouldn't do it.

I would think that at a bare minimum they would offer as much assistance as Cadels own teams of the first decade of the century...
