How long would it take?

Postby ozstriker » Sat Jul 07, 2012 7:08 pm

Realistically how long would you have to train to hold a 40+ kph average speed over 100k's, like this person. http://app.strava.com/rides/11740636#

Can this only be achieved with group riding or could you do this solo.

Would this take years of cycling to get this good. Obviously my example is actually a professional, does that mean i would have to quit my day job and train full time.

Well, upon googling him I found that he is no mug on the pedals.... There would be a few km's worth of training in that body. Some Impressive rides on his page that is for sure.

Tour of Toowomba stage 4 ... Not a solo ride. Nice average all the same.
Jump on tt bike and if you are a strong rider it shouldn't be too hard :-) .

My mate Jeff Jones averaged 41 km/h for a 12 hour TT last year. He covered a touch over 491 km. And went into work the next day...

This year he has done a 50 mile (~80 km) TT in 1h44'24" (46.3 km/h), a 50'41" 25 mile (~40 km) TT in atrocious conditions (47.3 km/h) and an almost unbelievable (for a non-pro) 18'09" for a 10 miler (~16.1 km) at 53.3 km/h.

In his case, it took 22 years to get to that point, although improved training plans over the last few years have definitely sharpened his power, and he's close to perfected his aero position.

Still be younger than Jeannie Longo, who looks like missing the Olympics for the 1st time, since women's cycling was introduced in 1984, because she only finished 5th in the French National TT championships (she did win the previous 4 years, as well as numerous other times, French National Road, World Championships etc)

I was there when he did his first race. It was my first race too. A warm, sunny and windy Saturday afternoon at Heffron Park in January 1989. We raced E Grade and finished 1st and 2nd!

I think a lot of people are very relieved that Longo isn't riding the Olympics this year... her image isn't so great these days.

The big question is who was first who was second?

History does not record... I do recall that we made a break by tagging onto C Grade when they came past. The E Graders were good-hearted folk who allowed two first-timers to keep their placings, and simply advised us of our error. I suspect they also didn't want to race against us again. And they didn't.
