Wow those fixies look awesome!

I never really knew much about fixies until recently.

Recently I decided to build up a Mountain Bike, which is my first build. I might consider building a fixie in a few months.

If I want to build up a vintage style fixie, what budget would I be looking at ? Where are the best places to look for fixie frames?

I read that it was illegal in victoria to have a bicycle without one functioning brake when riding on road.

What brands of vintage frames are worth saving? Where do I look for them?

There you go. It cost me $32 to put together.. its nearly all hard rubbish. Since I have put two new tires on it .... $20 (the pair... i didnt say they were good tires) Its done about 2900 km for me and including a melb roubaix. It rides lovely on cobbles actually. Its an SS with brakes on both ends. The frame is a Robs (blackburn) bike shop... late 40,s early 50s.. had 19 inch wheels no brakes except a coaster.. its now got a set of 700s that had been dumped because of broken spokes. Note the horizontal rear drop out . Could not call it a track drop out . its just that the tube has been bashed together weilded and cut. A feature of these bikes .. I have another hard rubbish frame from the 50s or 60s with the same feature. Not as pretty a frame. Its hanging around until the right bits turn up.

And posting the above got me motivated to start on the second Robs frame.

Threw away the severely rusty bits. Found it a long headstem and a set of bars and some rims.. and mocked it up to see what it will look like

Its 54 square so its going to be a tad small for me. And I dont see Kathy on a SS. And with those horizontal dropouts anything else would be a waste.

It came apart really easily. Its not going to be a troublesome project at all. It seems to want to be sorted.

Have had my old Cell sitting around doing nothing, so I figured I'd may as well convert it to SS just to see if I could do it! (I am quite mechanically incompetent with bikes )

Of course, it doesn't hold a candle to some of the beautiful bikes in this thread, but I'm feeling pretty proud of myself as I've just tested it out in the street and it didn't make any funny noises or fall apart.



Actually bought a chain tensioner to use, but it turns out I didn't need it which is great. Have just stuck some old pedals I had lying around on there for now.

Cell Cileto frame plus parts from the Cell fixie (Wheels, Crank set, Handlebars, brake levers) and an old Giant (seat post and brakes) proper top tube cable brackets yet to arrive. Pazzaz stem which came with drop bars but decided on the flats. Maxxis re-fuse tyres. Seat found in a bike shops bargain bin.

Had 46x16 freewheel and fixed, I changed the freewheel to an Shimano 18 so I could actually ride it, I'm waiting on the 18 fixed gear to arrive still.

Not the cheapest fixie - $250 frame, $250 donor cell fixie plus the other bought bits - but I had fun building it and I love riding it.

The cell ciletto is one of the more nicer 'low end' steel lugged frames, very under rated imo.

I found an XL sized 80's road frame to suit my height better than my other bikes, so I built another Gulf bike...vulgar, yes but, well...it's done now

+1 gah-zillion points for attention to detail...I wonder how many people noticed that you even rotated to the wheels so that both valves were at TDC for the photo Regardless of individual taste you can't argue with the quality of the finish. Very nice indeed.

I've always wanted to do a gulf style paint job maybe in the future. the one I have in mind now is purple. lol

52:16 is a great ratio IMO
I used to ride it fixed as a courier and loved the speed but, after riding about 80-100km a day over 10 hours, my knees are knackered so I'm now riding 44:16 free-wheel
