New to track riding...bike suggestions

Postby AP81 » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:09 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what bikes I should be looking at in the $500 range. I'm new to track (have ridden velodrome a couple of times), but not new to riding. Don't want to invest too much for an initial bike.

The Fuji Classic looks good, and some second hand bikes (Felt TK2, Trek T1) seem to crop up a bit on ebay. Also would consider building my own (VISP,fresco).

Thanks.

At that price, definitely second hand. You should get some significantly better bits than new if you do your homework.

The fuji is the only bike worth touching under $900 new,
The classic or the feather a great value for money.

The Avanti Pista is commonly around 650 new. I can vouch for these it was first and present track bike and it's all I could ask for at the moment. Although it is significantly heavier than a lot it still does the trick. I hate to tell you this but in my opinion you're not going to find any decent track bikes for 500 at the moment, especially the one's you mentioned. Are you with a cycling club? Have you ridden a track bike on a velodrome before? I'd recommend giving it a while to sink in and race and train on one of you're cycling club's bikes or rentals before you make a purchase. The other thing is don't buy a VISP.

I've been talking to my mate who had a hill brick. He said that what your really paying for in a hill brick is the stiffness, not the lightness. It is also recommended that you choose a frame size that's one centimeter below what you ride in a road bike but I'm pretty sure it'd fit. Maybe just a shorter stem? I'd say it's a good deal for an entry level track bike.

You could say that about any track frame really - even the full carbon BT frames used by national level riders are built for stiffness and aerodynamics, weight is a very low priority for a track bike.

Ridden on a concrete velodrome, but not on a proper track bike. Looking at joining a cycling club and going to an open day soon. I've been looking at the Avanti Pista, and would spend the $650. I'll probably wait until I ride a couple of times on a loaner bike before committing to anything.

This was the other frame I was contemplating getting (http://www.red2bicycle.com/products/201 ... pping.html). However, by the time I've bought wheels, chainset, headset, bars, etc, I reckon it would come close to the $600 mark anyway.

Thanks for your help.

If you haven't had any experience riding a track bike on a velodrome, do that first on a rental and get used to it, don't think about the bike yet. Race, ride, train on it. Think about the bike once you've tried it and you know you like it. I rode my club's steel hillman for about 5 months with shorts, a t shirt and sneakers before I considered getting a track bike of my own and lycra to match (no joke!). So just don't think about the bike until you've experienced it and then you'll know how much time and money you want to put into the sport.

The bike has got me plenty of wins at a pretty good level. Will be testing it out at raw on friday.

I've sold hundreds of them and never had a complaint or a return, perfect as a club bike right through to state level competition. If you can flex one sufficiently for it to be a problem you should probably be in London right now riding a BT that was custom made just for you :-)

Ok. If I ever get the chance I'll ride one and base my opinion from my own experience. I don't doubt they may be very reliable and stiff frames but I was only speaking off a secondary source.
