Absolutely awesome.

Most experienced and safe cyclists have learnt to ride in the middle and assertively. Sometimes I do find it hard to explain why it is so important. This explains it all.

That linked video is one I've been trying to find for a long time (it's on Vimeo not Youtube :roll: ). It very clearly shows the real safety benefit of riding 'in the lane' rather than way over to the left (right in US video).

Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.

While I agree whole hearted with the sentiment at that web site, and I do agree that taking the full lane whenever possible is the best way to ride.

However I would like to see the same video redone in a situation encountered far too often, and that is in peak hour traffic with every lane chock a block full of cars.

In that situation I’m not sure as to what the outcome would have been.

I routinely do long rides on 6 and 4 lane roads in sydney and claim the lane throughout, whether its busy or not. IMO busier is almost alway safer as there is little danger of being crossed on a 6 lane road by oncoming traffic (intersections are fully controlled and formal), and there are physical dividers to stop midblock crosses, and busier always slows the traffic speed down.

The only circumstance I don't like is the bizarre Sydney habit of allowing parking on arterials, which is an outshoot of the terrible planning that has the blocks alongside each arterial zoned commercial. Once there is parked cars, I spend long periods of timing having to claim the middle lane.
