Ultegra 6700 Weight tunning

Postby usernameforme » Tue Jul 31, 2012 3:12 pm

I figure weight weenies might be a better place to ask this question but it can't hurt to ask can it

I was wondering if anyone here has tuned a shimano ultegra groupset. I would like to know how much weight you lost through tuning and how much effort/money it takes.

thanks

Dura Ace 7900 parts are now cheap (because of the release of 9000). If you buy some 7900 shifters and a front derailleur you'll save a bit of weight. This is the cheapest way to do it with a straight Shimano component swap. Dura Ace cranks are lighter but double the price. The weight difference of the brakes and rear derailleur is virtually nothing.

The change from Tiagra to Ultegra cassette would of got you 100g that is less than one pedal
The change from the stock KMC change to ULtegra would of got you maybe 20g at most that is less than one bottle cage

so either the original quoted weight was way off, but about 8kg (maybe + or - 250gm) looks about right for a 56cm given the specs, you have a smaller model (that would account for 200g at max) or your scale is out. Or maybe a combination of the above

Still good upgrade, 100gm off rotational weight of rear wheel will get you accelerating faster. Quality chain + cassette, means quieter and longer lasting drivetrain.

Is it worth the effort/money to even attempt it?

All up the Ultegra 6700 groupset weights in at 2441g, it is probably easier and cheaper to replace components than by attempting to tune components.

Ultegra 6700 Crankset 737g Alternatives Dura Ace 7900 636g ($390 c r c) SRAM Red 655g ($275 Planet X) FSA K-Force Light Team 660g ($240 c r c)
Ultegra 6700 Shifters 490g Dura Ace 7900 448g ($457 ribble) Microshift Arsis 388g ($210 ebay)
Ultegra 6700 RD 209g Dura Ace 7900 166g ($187 ribble) Microshift Arsis 198g ($110 ebay)
Ultegra 6700 FD 89g Dura Ace 7900 67g ($90 ribble) Microshift Arsis 68g ($80 ebay)
Ultegra 6700 Cassette 204g Dura Ace 163g ($208 ribble) SRAM Red 155g ($177 ribble) Mowa 108g ($150 ebay)
Ultegra 6700 Brake Calipers 330g Dura Ace 293g ($280 ribble) SRAM Reg 265 ($200 planet X) Planet X Ultralight 205g ($100 planet X)

I know this, because for my next project, I am using Microshift Arsis groupset from Yishun Bike for less than $300 delivered via a group buy on another forum (Velobuild) paired with FSA SLK crankset + BB off ebay, SRAM Red cassette (ebay), Planet X Ultralight brakes, KMC X10SL chain $700 for Dura Ace weight 2.1kg, could get it under 2kg with lighter crank, bb and cassette

I'll be interested to see how you get along with your Arisis stuff and PX brakes nickobec. I had considered the brakes but the single pivot design puts me off a bit... I was just interested to see if anyone has tuned their ultegra to decent weight. But obviously all the weight weenies have bought rival being 200g lighter and a similar cost...
