2011 Fuji SST 2.0 with Ultegra Groupset

Postby averagerider » Thu Aug 02, 2012 12:51 pm

Hey Guys and Gals

Need some independent info on the 2011 Fuji SST 2.0 cant really find any review done by any of the publications, have asked a few of them on twitter and got told to sign up to their forums and ask the members

So my questions are

1. What are the Fuji bikes like
2. I have found one of the above mentioned bikes for $2000 down from $3900 (not sure what original price was but that is whats on the tag underneath the what he wanted for it) as shop owner said he needs to move them on before new stock, is it a good deal or should i keep looking.

i have been riding on and off for a year or two but am now looking at upgrading from my Giant OCR 3 and getting a decent bike

Any help is greatly appreciated

Cheers
Luke

1. They are awesome. I ride an SST 1.0 which is slightly higher spec, stiffer, ISP etc.
The SST 2.0 was reviewed a while back in Ride magazine, to good overall results.

2. $2000 is a bargain for a fully Ultegra equipped SST.

Agree with MarkG

I bought a 2012 SST2.0 a few weeks ago. I think they are great value for money!

I have only done a couple of hundred km's so far but I have been very happy with the way it feels.

You should test ride it before you make any decision as they are very stiff and might not be what you are looking for.

just a bit of food for thought, the SST is a very different bike to the OCR. Whilst the OCR is more centered on all day comfort, the SST is super stiff, has a really aggressive geometry and is more a race orientated bike.

I looked at this bike but thought I needed something more endurance geometry.

Really nice bike looks fantasitic make sure it fits and good luck with the decision.

Cheers for the help people, being relatively new to higher end bikes and racing
Your responses have raised a couple more questions

1. Hammo what do you mean when you say the bike is stiff.

2. Jeff what is the difference between geometries, I assume there is racing and endurance types.

Cheers again for your help

Test ride it! If you like it then buy it.

Saw one at Gold Cross Cycles a little while ago. Was even my size. Just didn't have that type of money to spend at the time.

$2000 is a very decent price for that bike IMO.

Fuji make an Altimira which is more aimed for endurance rides versus criterium rides, its all about the angles of the posts and what position it puts the rider in. It doesnt matter that much considering a TDU stage was won on an SST 3.0 frame.

Luke,

Race geometry bikes are more aggressive, ultra stiff, and less vertical compliance - look at the shapes of the SST, Venge, and Ridley Noah as examples.

A more 'traditional' shape is more of a GC bike, like Danny the boy said, the Altamira for one, the Ridley Helium etc - less stiffness, more compliance.

Each to their own - I put a !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! load of k's on my SST and don't find it uncomfortable, tho in saying that, if I went to a more relaxed bike, I could def'n tell the difference!

Thanks for all your help people, used some of your advice and took the bike for a test ride.

An amazing difference in comfort and smoothness compared to my old bike

So I think you can guess by that line that I am a proud owner of said bike.

Took the bike for a ride today, did 37kms and am very happy with bike.

In the end it cost me $2270 for the bike, a new set of shimano 105 pedals, limar 777 helmet, wireless basic computer, front and rear basic cateye lights and a bottle cage.

Very happy, and now my riding journey begins

Thankyou all

Luke

Hi Jason

Ive had the bike 2 months now but havent had time for any 100km trips due to Football finals
and being mucked around at work having to stay late and so forth

the longest trip ive been on is around 60kms and i felt fine once i'd finished, also still felt comfortable
towards the end of my ride. My average rides are between 30-40km during the week and 50-60 on weekends

ive only had three road bikes in my time a Big W special my wife bought me thinking she was doing something nice,
a Giant OCR 3 and now the Fuji which is far superior.

i've only started riding like this in the last 6 months so my knowledge of bikes comfort may not hold much weight,
but i can tell you that it is by far the most comfortable bike i have ridden so far.

hope that helps.

Hey Jason,

I have the SST 1.0 as does MarkG and I'm sure he will agree its a stiff ride but certainly very comfortable, well at least for me 8)

so I bit the bullet and bought it last weekend. First ride on it today. Go the cages recommended by rabobank.

Without trying, this bike just goes.
Will post more of a review in a month
Thanks

So I had a chance to weigh my bike this morning. With garmin bits, bottle cages and pedals it's 8.44kgs
Am very impressed.

Yeah, for an ultra stiff bike, the SST is suprisingly not that heavy.
In saying that, stiff bikes are never going to be featherweights due to the excess amounts of carbon used to achieve a stiffer frame.

Am pretty sure the SST 1.0 is a different frame. Either way, for 8kgs, it's 4.5kgs lighter than my giant flat bar

As I've stated, the geo is the same, just a different carbon fibre grade and different lay up.
