Hello... As I have commented in other post... I´ll arrive in Perth in October to expend 6/10 months around Australia heading Nueva Guinea..
Once arrived I´ll stay a week in Perth... (planning...jet-lag....) I have some things that need to be replaced and I prefer to buy this articles in Perth once there and try to save some money (extra price for extra luggage and € is higher than AUD).
Im looking for a Tent, Stove, titan cutlery and some little things...and I would like to buy some Maps (paper)...
What shops do you recommend?
And last question..
I have a GPS and I would to download some tracks... I´m user of Wikiloc but there is a few information about Australia... So.. is there a website to see and download tracks?
And maps in paper... which one recommend ?
Thanks in advance..
Juanjo

Bike and Mountain Shops in Australia

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Shops: I'll leave you to Google the names but here goes - Mountain Designs; Mountain Equipment; Paddy Pallin; Kathmandu; Anaconda; Mainpeak; Snowgum; Macpac; Rays Outdoors plus local specialty players. They may not all be in this marketplace but most of them will have an outlet.
Maps: http://www.ga.gov.au/topographic-mapping.html and http://www.hemamaps.com.au/Home/tabid/90/Default.aspx will get you started
Mapping is a State based specialty - each state has a government department that produces and prints topographic maps. However, fine detail is notoriously unreliable in terms of what actually constitutes a 'road' so one must rely as much on local knowledge as on what appears on paper.

Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

The strip maps available from RAA are good for the long hauls and show important stuff like rest areas and roadhouses.
If you can get your head around looking at a straight line on a map which covers over 300kms for one page.

Personally I would be buying the stuff in Europe and bringing it with you ... the exchange rate isn't likely to make up for the Australian prices/lack of range. That said, in the city itself, you can find the following retailers all pretty close together:JJBLOOD wrote:Im looking for a Tent, Stove, titan cutlery and some little things...and I would like to buy some Maps (paper)...
What shops do you recommend?
Mountain Designs
Mainpeak (They have a good online shop - will give you a good idea on prices. They are generally good on Exped gear for example).
Paddy Pallin
Kathmandu (Personally wouldn't buy anything from them I depended on).
Macpac
My approach is to use http://ridewithgps.com and to map out my planned routes and then download them to my Garmin Edge 800. Also if you have an iPhone or iPad check out Mapletts App. Looks pretty interesting.I have a GPS and I would to download some tracks... You will need various maps. My preference is Hema maps and in WA also the StreetSmart touring maps. IIRC there is map shop near the stores listed above, otherwise if you visit Fremantle there is the Chart and Map shop which is pretty good. And maps in paper... which one recommend ?
Oh if you make Fremantle, happy to catch up for a coffee

I agree with aushiker. There's no advantage to buying stuff in Australia. Its expensive here. Its not going to be cheaper for you than you can find in europe.
I agree with him on other points as well. eg hema maps and his suggestions about brands. I've got a macpac tent. Its been great. I've got a mountain designs thermarest which has been good though i've only used it on one two month trip so far.

You have a range of excellent European tents over there available for much better prices. Exped and Hilleberg come to mind (though these are better as cool conditions tents). For stoves there are many to choose from, and the ever-present camp-fire discussion point - Trangia or MSR
Go shopping at home or on the web, before coming to Australia.

Thanks.. The website is good.. but if you want to download maps directly to your Garming.. you have to be a Premium member.. Is that right?Aushiker wrote:My approach is to use http://ridewithgps.com and to map out my planned routes and then download them to my Garmin Edge 800. I think there is the same question/discussion everywhere, even in Spain... But we include another one Primus Omnifuelil padrone wrote: Trangia or MSR

Not to my knowledge. I just "view" rather than "edit" the route and it gives me a list of download options in the right hand panel. I choose the TCX version for my Garmin Edge 800.JJBLOOD wrote:Thanks.. The website is good.. but if you want to download maps directly to your Garming.. you have to be a Premium member.. This database might be handy .. http://fuel.papo-art.com/Mine works perfectly but it works with Gas.. and I don´t know in Australia but in most places its very difficult to find it or impossible... for this reason I´ll buy a new one.
