New Bike For Under $2500

Postby Rowa » Mon May 12, 2008 10:48 pm

I am fairly new to cycling and am looking at upgrading my current road bike that I have had for 2 years that cost me $1000 as an entry level racer. What good bikes are out there for under $2500? I want a bike that is light, fast, good all round (hills and flat) and good value for money. Can anyone reccomend any bikes please? I live is Brisbane if you know of any good deals.

Your help is appreciated.

Cheers.

G'Day Rowa, welcome outside.

For that money, you won't get a bad bike. I'll push Giant as a very happy owner, but a quick search here will bring up a helluva lot of satisfied owners of other brands.

Main thing to consider is fit and comfort, only a test ride can answer that. If the shop isn't interested in test rides, go elsewhere.

Seeing as your old girl is still serviceable, take your time, surf the net and haunt a few good shops, find the bike that grabs you by the eyeballs and says "You and me mate, hard, fast, now!"

One last thing, when you go into a shop, tell them your budget is $2000. That way, when you buy that $2900 unit for $2500, the shop thinks they've won. You'll know you have

I'll put a vote in for 08 Scott CR1, I paid $2600 (and the rest!!!)....Excellent bike.

When I was looking last year the others were Giant TCR C2 - 105, Colnago CLX - 105(although this was a little more expensive), Specialized Tarmac - 105.

Searching was the best part....your bike will find you.

The last Ride Cycling Review mag had a review of bikes around this price range - they did 5 from memory and top marks went to the Scott for build quality. The new issue is out now, but you may be in luck and find one in a shop to browse through.

btw - I ride an 07 Scott CR1 :D

I thought they were a bit over Rowas budget, cool. If you want CF Rowa...
(Not a fan of the TCR livery this year)

G'day Rowa

Unless you are an accomplished A or B grade criterium racer, I would be comparing head tube lengths and narrowing the search down to bikes with long head tubes.

i dunno if scott's are that great value. but i own a trek (which ain't that far removed) so what would i know?

for 2500 you should be able to get a good quality aluminum frame with at least full ultegra components from one of those major brands. i have 105/ultegra atm and it is good, but i kinda wish sometimes for better brakes and maybe shifting that doesn't need to be tuned so often.

my advice would be to buy a $2000 bike and buy a super awsm saddle, and some decent tyres and maybe some other small upgrade or super bling knicks/jersey...

i know kid carbine says it is "all about the bike"...but i say "it is all about the bike and it is all about how good you look on said bike". totally :)

but in saying this - and i've said it many times before:
i don't know much about stuff.

They are great value, they are made by Giant.

105 specced CR1 for $2600 is good value.

Just been into new shop in adelaide Tailwind cycles who stock scott bikes and they have scott, treks and merida on sale until end of the month, good bargains to be had as well as minoura trainers at 15% off list prices.

got to be worth a look if your after a roady. :)

Thanks everyone for your help. There has been some good insightful information. Does anyone know anygood dealers in the Brisbane area? Scott dealers? or even Giant and Trek dealers?
What should be included in the deal when buying? shoes, pump, spare kit, water bottle, computer, ect?

Doubt you will get anything included if the bike price is discounted from the normal retail price, but you should be able to haggle a deal on any other stuff you buy at the same time of 10-15 % off.

good luck :D

Hi Rowa,
There are 3 bikes you should consider: 1. Bianchi. 2. Bianchi. 3. Bianchi.
The oldest bike manufacturer in the world (over 120 years!!), and just plain beautiful! Do not be swayed by the unwashed masses! :)

Pity about the colour and the really boring design. For an Italian company they really need a stylist :)

Yeah, they REALLY lack style: http://www.bianchiusa.com/08_c2c_928_chorus.html
Celeste is the trademark colour, much like red is for Ferrari. If you don't understand, maybe buy a Giant! :)

I should probably weigh in with a vote for the Avanti brand. Until next week their dealer network has some good deals on too. http://www.avantibikes.com :-)

As you can see from my sig I have an Avanti Corsa. Ultegra-spec (except for wheels and pedals), alloy and carbon framed (carbon seat post, seat stay/chain stay and forks). It weighs in at about 9kg and retails for $2599. I was able to pick my up for $2200 by befriending the local bike shop (and my first bike the Avanti Blade was purchased from the same shop so that helped).

Not quite as good dollar for dollar value as the equivalent Giant or Cell bike perhaps but I'm very happy with it.

avanti giro is on sale for $1600.
carbon fork, rear stay, seat post. 105 groupset. pretty good value. one of the bikes iam considering personally. Only catch is the longer wheel base which is not important unless u wanna get into racing later.

Im trying to decide that or something with a shorter wheel base.
