Restoring 28inch rimsHi guys, I am in the process of retorting an old Hartley which has 28 inch rims with a coaster hub which are in need of restoration and I am contemplating replacing them with a 27 inch or restoring the old rims. I have never spoked a rim and I am wondering what are the pitfalls and is it something a novice should attempt. If I given it a go what do I need and where is the best place to get spokes? Look forward to any help or feed back, will post pics of the project soon, thanks, Drewy
Re: Restoring 28inch rimsI would try and restore the 28s, tyres and tubes are still available and they look good IMO. There are a bunch of books and websites with instructions on lacing wheels, the only thing particular to your wheels is if the are the old westwood profile you will need the little oval spoke washers. I got some from an ebay seller in canada quite cheaply, so they are still available.

Re: Restoring 28inch rims
If necessary you can make these oval washers from suitably sized thin round brass washers. I have done this in pre-E-Bay times...If you can buy them do so Cheers Richard
Re: Restoring 28inch rimsThanks guys, I'll give it a go, pic to follow........
Re: Restoring 28inch rimsI'll tag along on this Drewy, I'll need to do the same.
Got some Westwood 28" rims off eBay I will need to do the same. Some surface rust but overall in good shape. I plan to fit drum brakes so will need to do something about spokes as well.
Re: Restoring 28inch rimsHey Pete, I am in the process of sourcing spokes, nipples, washers, etc, when I do I will pass the details onto you, Cheers Drewy
Re: Restoring 28inch rimsCheers Drewy, that'd be awesome. Will be a while off doing mine but the info will be very good to know.
