Wheelbuilding with Farsport carbon 29er clinchers

Postby MichaelB » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:39 am

Finally.

Have put in the order for a pair of Farsports 29er rims (25mm deep x 24mm wide) to built up as a disc set for the Kona Honky Inc. They are slightly wider & deeper rims when compared to those that Andrew Burns sourced from FS a while ago as a wheelset.

I'll be using bladed spokes, alloy nipples and my Circus Monkey Hubs (the rear is the CX specific new one that is 130mm OLN), and should be spot on 1,400g complete. It will be a saving of near as damnit to 1,000g over the existing std wheelset on the Kona.

Might notice a teeensy difference.

Will post some pics and details when the rims and other parts arrive.

Standby to standby

I'm keen to see your results - have been thinking about giving wheel building a go...

Post some pics up when you get the chance!

Cheers,

So far so good.

Pics from FarSports shows the pair of rims are spot on 740g, so that is a good start.

Rims arrived today at work. Initial inspections reveals all is good so far, but will have a clower look tonight at home.

Spokes (black bladed) and nipples (red alloy to match hubs) were ordered this morning.

Hubs are ready to rock and roll, and I'm ready to build !!!

The rims arrived the other day and they look good.

Farsports and i are having an amicable discussion re the version of rims sent (they recently updated their mould and i got the old spec rather than the new). This meant a potential issue with the spokes, but we are working through that.

Here are some pics of the rim (32 hole) - Rim spec is 24mm wide x 23mm deep, 700C, and weight is 375g (spec is 370 +/- 10g). The 28 hole was 372g. Finish on both is UD Matte.

Whilst the surface finish (especially in the last pic) looks rough, it is as smooth as.

The holes are well formed and round, and no apparent issues so far.

Here are the hubs

Stay tuned for more !!!

Spokes and nipples are on their way.

Overall weight will be a smidge above the 1,400g for a full wheelset.

Not bad considering the 28/32 hole combo !!!

It wont be a quick process, but it will happen :D

Got all the bits and pieces now, but due to a change in plans, I'm selling the CM hubs, waiting to get a new frame (liklely the Volagi Lisacio) and build these up with a set of 135mm hubs, as that is the new spacing.

BUT ..., if anyone wants these hubs, spokes and/or rims, or even as a wheelset, let me know.

Cheers

Finally will have a crack at building the rear tomorrow.

I have a new HDW3-R rear hub (135mm spacing) to suit the new frame (Volagi Liscio v2). I'm waiting on the front (oh what a sorry tale that is :? ), but anyway, lets move on.

Based on actual components weights on my scales, the rear should be 777g (not bad for a 23mm wide carbon clincher with MTB disc hub and 32 spokes). Front should be 648g for same setup but 28 spokes. That makes the overall wheelset 1,425g, for a total of under A$600.

Some pics to come over the next few days.

Front hub should arrive soon, and that build will then be shown as well :D

Standby to standby, I finally get to crank my new Wrench Force wheel truing stand into action

I should have a go a building my own wheels at some point, watching with great interest.

As a side note my farsports 29er disc wheels are still going very strong on the commuter, I've taken some pretty hefty thumps with them including an un-planned jump off a kerb with a loaded pannier on Monday and they just keep taking it no problems. It was a complete pain to get the tyres on when they were new though, I thought I was going to break the rim with my tyre levers!

Rear wheel is laced and started tensioning.

Have some tradies around at the moment, so full tensioning and trueing will be done later.

Some pics as teasers .......

Laced up and ready to tension

Front wheel laced last night.

646g :D

Makes it 1,421g for the pair. Not bad considering the spoke count.

More pics to come

Enve are currently testing their 29er rims with roadie tyres. I am considering getting some made up if I end up upgrading my frame...

It has been a rather long drawn out process, but with house reno stuff taking priority, it just took a while.

Anyways, the rear wheel is now full tensioned and trued, and the front is 75% there.

There are going to be a few stinkers here soon, so that may be an opportunity to get the front finished, finally.

Then, all I need is the frame ....

Managed to get some time yesterday arvo, and the wheels are now finished and tyres mounted. Thye Ultremo ZX 25C's fit beautifully with no issues.

Some pics to come shortly
