Hey mate, yep it sure is, a 1949 T2.

It's the reason for the whole Malvern Star restoration... I'm trying to restore both and keep them authentic to the era.

I'm very keen to get this done and this is my first attempt at a true vintage restoration.

Where did you find one of them? Got anymore?

My dad gave it to me, no idea why he had one floating around but I'm not complaining

Here is the most recent state of adaptation of the late 70's Double X.
Shifting now with downtube shifters - i could not cope with the original bar end shifters.
7 speed cassete with 6 speed index shifters, adjusted to be unable to access the smallest cog.
currently running a 9-speed chain.
Original cranks, handlebars, derailleurs and frontbrake.
Next stage will be to put a more modern front brake on for better stopping power.
(And perhaps a larger outer ring for more downhill speed)

It doesn't have to be that way. Shimano levers go into friction mode once you go past the last click, so you can set it up to 'index' low gear against the derailleur limit screw. I ran an 8 speed cassette with a 7 speed shifter this way for a while.

I have just finished my 2 star project. I saved it from op shop a few of months ago, they were going to take to the tip. I had to push to get them to take just $2 for it, they wanted nothing. Bike was not going and had non original bars, grips, wheels multiple bad paint jobs etc. The frame and forks wernt perfect but underneath all the paint the frame was not rusty. The serial no is 5.7125 at top of seat post join and it has welded risers. I honestly don't know how old it is, but it is thought to be fairly old bike. Thanks to my father in law Dave for paint job, Warren for information, and in particular Deb for cranks etc. I am looking forward to getting out on it with the misses who has also just finished her 2 star ladies resto.

And this is the misses 2 star. Not bad. Picked up from Queenscliff for $36 in orig condition with light rust all over. Has new wheels, guards and seat but the rest in original but re chromed, repainted.

I concur, nice bikes. Curious what's going on with the fork tips and the bands next to the logos? Looks sort of metallic but not chrome?

Nothing special re fork ends, originlal part chromed ends, not rechromed, discovered once paint stripped off. Just left it and painted down and trimmed.
I'd appreciate any other guess as to age of it.

Is the Warren you refer to in an earlier post bicyclepassion? If it is, go with whatever he has told you.

LG yes he has advised the upside down serial number 5.7215 is unusual and may be a non conforming serial no and based on other details estimates 29-34.

Finished my train station bike, spent more on new parts than I had originally planned (always the way). It's a Malvern Star Special 10, which copped a metallic blue respray straight over the original slightly less metalic blue by its previous owner, I rubbed back the main tubes with some steel wool but got bored and never finished the tricky bits around the lugs. It rides like a dog, the 52/16 is a bit too much to push even on my relatively flat, 3km ride to the train station. Absolutely bone jarring ride compared to my Repco/Nishiki. Can I put that down to the heavy gauge hi-ten steel forks and bars as opposed to Cro-Mo?

Old Parts: A pair of well used Mavic Open 4CD's (not the lovely wear patterns) on Shimano 600 hubs, Vittoria tyres, Sugino RT cranks with 52t drillium chainring and a few washers, Selle Italia TransAm saddle, cable housing, Custom branded stem & misc steel drops.

New parts: Generic 16t SS conversion kit, KMC Chain, brake cables, bar tape, alloy seat post, Dia-Compe long reach callipers and aero levers, Wellgo M-111 pedals (not pictured).

Photo shows SR Suntour platform pedals, horrible things to ride on without toe clips as gravity keeps them spindle side up, OUCH!

Can anyone help decode a serial number? I recently picked up a Malvern Star AL12 Mixte. It has Shimano Golden Arrow shifters, FD and RD so I'm assuming it is a mid-80's model? The number stamped on the underside of the BB is M3J74577. Thanks!
