Visiting Perth, need training or racing!

Hi all,

Work has me flying over to Perth next week for two weeks. I'll be flying back just in time for the nsw state champs (anyone can enter so I'm not that great ). I don't really want to ruin the preparation so...

I'll hire a bike and bring some necessities along but would like some advice on clubs near enough to east Perth that do mid week training rides (if they exist). Also, on doing some research there seems to be a race on the 1st of september held by the peel districts cc. Is that open to all licences riders? If so, is it relatively easy to ride down there, and what sort of quality of racing is it?

If you say you're around for the 1st then we have a handicap race in Wandi (link). Head South down the Kwinana Freeway shared path for about 35km until you reach Ankatell Rd, you can also take a bike on the train for free so the Mandurah Line to Kwinana station is also an option.

+1 for South Perth Roulers they do mid week morning rides

Never ridden with them I live too far south and do my training commuting or racing, but I have friends who ride regularly with them and highly recommend it to others and me, just got to get up extra extra early and ride 40km to join in.

Go to their website, find their contact details and ask them with of their rides are suitable for your needs, they have more than one.

Racing, pretty sure it is open to all Cycling Australia gold licence holders. I will PM you Roger Wooley club treasurer and one of the handicappers email address, so you can ask him + make sure you get a fair handicap. Can't have you getting an easy (or excessively hard) handicap.

If you can survive the maze of detours currently on the PSP, the Wandi circuit is only 35km from Perth. Normally Perth to the Anketell Road, you would stick to the PSP and cross one road. But currently widening the freeway, fixing a couple of bad spots so you get detoured around. Again, the train travels down the middle of the freeway, catch the train to Cockburn Central, 15km ride to Wandi or Kwinana station only 8km (but no so obvious how to get on the PSP). Need directions let me know.

It has been great for riding this week! Been out with SPR Tuesday and Thursday, some nice riding when the rain holds off wed and friday around town. Just about to head down to Wandi for the race. See you there!

Seems like Perth is the place to be this week.

Mrs C+W is off to Perth and looking for a more relaxed ride of 20-30km from the CBD on Thursday and Friday mornings. Only a short distance, as needs to get off to work and will have a slower hire bike (probably more upright hybrid). Any suggestions on where she should head? Semi-regular cyclist and commuter and needing to get some km up for 210 km Around the Bay in a few weeks.

On my recovery days I do laps of the bay/river. It's all shared paths and flat.

Riverside drive over the narrows bridge then left onto south Perth esplanade. Follow the path along the water to causeway bridges and back onto riverside drive. All up about 10km with great views!

Good hard racing today! Still got the pursuitist's cough 2 hrs later but was all worth it. It reminded me of a crit, some a graders were calling it more of a kermese. I like to call it an hour or so of pain!

Met nicobec and madrapper, everywhere i go with the DHBC jersey people ask me how mikesbytes is. That man must get around!

Also in the same vein for Mrs C+W

head down the shared path the runs between the river the Kwinana Freeway, under Canning Bridge, over Mount Henry Bridge turn right and head towards the river and the Esplanade (that is what the road along the river in Mt Pleasant is called), two choices ride along the shared path or the Esplanade back to Canning Bridge, ride under then over and back onto the the shared path the runs between the river the Kwinana Freeway to the CBD. About 15km round trip.

Personally recommend the Esplanade, locals are use to heavy bike traffic there. The shared path on that side has too many people walking dogs, pushing prams and walking in groups of 3, 4 or 5 across the path)

Also you can ride from the CBD to UWA along another share path between the river and mounts bay road/stirling highway. 10km or so there and back

Bike paths/Shared paths (official name) along the river have great views, pretty good surfaces, not a lot of traffic (exception above), no roads to cross,
