Handicaps are not the easiest race, as you are possibly contending with riders much stronger than yourself, but the points are worth it if you can pull it off. A new rider, Ben, was there for his first race. And since I was taking it easy in prep for another race the next day, I conspired to start in the same slower group and look out for him.

Next week, Sat 18th, is a Graded Points Score at Wandi. This race is similar to the points racing on the track, in that there is a sprint for points on every lap, and who has the most points: wins. Should be interesting as I haven't done one before!

Registrations from 1pm, Racing from 2pm - see you there!
How'd you go at Pickering Brook Mark?

I was pretty upset that I couldn't make it...till i saw the weather!! I fell off training a week ago and have pretty bad groin strain. Would have won the grade over all too :(

Yeah not the best, 5th in TT and top 10 for the RR. There's many differences between D Grade at PDCC and MCC, I'm at the low end of the spectrum in age and weight at Peel but at the high end at Midland!

Heh...yeah I know what you mean. I'm going to sign up for C grade next time I think and try and hang on.

If I manage to get back on track on the next few weeks I'll try and get down to one of the PDCC races for a blast round.

Only takes 20 minutes for a warm up lap, so an hour will give you plenty of time for gasbagging ;-)

So for myself, the Club Champs went okay. I had to miss the previous weekend's President's Cup Handicap due to the Flu, so it was the first race back. Stuck it out in the bunch, no shenanigans, launched my sprint from 600m out with hopes of holding it, but some of the stronger guys jumped on my wheel and kept hauling after I peaked. 4th place in the end.

We still have a race on tomorrow thou, Serpentine Course.
Regs from 1pm, racing from 2pm.
Hit up the website for a map.

I thought that I would give a quick race report for this past Saturday as it was reading Nick's that got me interested in signing up to race a couple of months ago in the first place. Perhaps I will have the same effect on someone else!

E Grade 22nd September Serpentine:

This was the second last road race of the season so I had put a lot of thought into doing well throughout the week. My plan was to stay disciplined and save myself for the final sprint as in the past I have attempted some stupid tactics only to blow up before the line. It was a small field of myself and four others, I picked someone I knew was likely to do well to keep an eye on and we were off.

Generally I don't do much work on the front, not for tactical reasons but because more often than not I am at 85-90% max heart rate whilst in the pace line which is something I've been trying to work on with base style training. Because of this I did a turn on the front for the first 4 or so km as hiding in the bunch for the final sprint isn't something I want to be known for. The rest of the pace work was shared between two other riders for the majority of the race who took turns doing long pulls into a headwind, I was impressed to say the least.

By the time we turned onto the final straight with 3km to go there were four of us left and I was sure I was about to be dropped. With about a km to go a relatively new rider attached but another rider and I quickly caught up and slotted in behind. Although I planned to start my sprint with 200m to go the adrenaline of the situation got to me and for reasons unknown I launched my attack at 400m. I quickly gained a 15m gap on the other two only to be faced with the all too common sinking feeling of fading before the line! In the end I placed 2nd, 9 seconds behind the winner. Talking to the winner after the race I realised my sprint had been 2km faster than his, just goes to show what could have been given the right timing!

I'm looking forward to next weeks race and hopefully I can get a win before crits start in November!

Matt

Just noticed, the time trial summer series starts this Wednesday, Hopeland TT course. Great event for those looking to try out a 16km time trial :)
