Difference in tyre wear

Postby liquor box » Sun Sep 09, 2012 1:48 pm

How much difference should there be between your tyre wear between front and back?

I am about to replace my back tyre after about 2500km and the front looks like it will go another 2500km at least. Are these good km's to achieve?

With Continental GP4000S's I get about 6000km out of a front tyre and about 4000km out of a rear. That is if that don't get destroyed by road debris. :(

I wonder if the weight of the rider makes a difference? I was about 100kg to start and am now 70kg, so hopefully this will increase the wear

2,500km is pretty poor for a rear tyre. I got 4,500km out of a 23mm Vittoria Rubino back when I was >105kg... but I don't replace my tyres until the cotton is showing.

I am going to try to hold off until the Brisbane to Gold Coast and then run a brand new one for that ride. I will stick to my method of applying super glue to all cuts I get. This morning I removed 3 pieces of glass from the tyre and glued the holes.

Actual k's I'm not sure of, but my rear definitely wears much faster than the front. When the rear needs replacing, I rotate the front to the rear and put the new one on the front. I find the rear gets quite squared off.

How long is a piece of string?
As for actual kilometres from a tyre: That depends of a number of factors such as type of tyre, rider weight, riding style, conditions of road surface & etc. I have had tyres that last from 2,000 kilometres (road tyres) to over 12,000 kilometres (touring tyres).
I generally go through 2.5 rear tyres for every one on the front.
