Has this been done before?
Am I nuts to even contemplate such a thing?....
I don't think so, as there's almost a peleton of DF and 'bent cyclists that have done, or are, doing this sort of thing. (CGOAB etc.,)
Any tips/ideas for velomobile 'survival' ... time of year? I guess summer is out, although a VM has good sun protection but I'll probably die of thirst/heat exhaustion...unless I tow a water truck (well, at least I'll be in my coffin if I DO expire )
Or am I going to be the first Velonaut to attemp this?
Any one wanna join me and help tow the water-trailer?? :winkI

Something similar has been done before with velomobiles. I think it was Perth to Canberra.

There was the duo Quest with electric drive and a kite auxillary power a few years ago.
No pedals though so really an electric car. Used a portable wind turbine to recharge overnight allegedly.
Riding a velomobile across would be OK on the WA roads with their wide shoulders.
Once you get to Border Village and into SA the shoulder disappears and the graded edge can be quite dangerous and rocky.
Saw the guy out grading near Yalata one day and all he does is smooth the big rocks and gravel to resemble a flat surface.
Not something you want to have to ride in by choice.
Once past Port Augusta things might be betterer for a VM if travelling inland.
My two crossings were 2009 - August and 2010 - June.
Both had very cold mornings to -4C and sweet days.
Got some frost bite on snozzer on first trip.

This will be an unsupported solo venture.(No real time restraints..6-8 weeks)
My main concern is water availability, I'm hoping to carry enough for a few days. I'm thinking of doing this trip in 12 months time... mid spring 2013
I'm a thirsty guy when I get cycling, probably consume a good litre per hour... or more if the heat is up.... I'm thinking I'll need a good 20-30ltrs min.at that rate, for 3days riding.

I'll be a mobile water tank trying to store that amount of water on a VM. Trailer for water? or not?
Maybe a dozen water bladders hanging off the VM?
Any ideas from the brains trust?
I don't want to be caught short....or rescued by the RFDS
I have carried 38 litres on my Surly Long Haul Trucker pulling a Extrawheel Voyager so I cannot see why not in a velomobile if you can pull a trailer.
How does it handle getting thrown around by road trains passing? They can be a right pain when the wind is wrong.
