Long rides and burning thighs

Postby ozstriker » Sat Sep 08, 2012 12:31 pm

I did my longest ride ever yesterday 94km at 27k average with 1000 m of climbing
Refer here http://app.strava.com/rides/21101665" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anyway, after about 70 k's my legs started burning, the same burning you get when climbing a hill but it just doesn't go away, if anything it was worst when I was stopped.

Is this normal?
Is my body just not ready?
Or is this part and parcel of distance riding?

I wAs drinking staminade during the ride and also eating bananas and muesli bars.

On a side note jeez I'm happy my knee is strong again,I'll be able to get back into my programme again soon.

Have you done much climbing before this?
Before I did my first crack at some hill climbing I had built up from doing 40k right up to doing a couple of 100's before.
I pulled up in decent shape afterwards and could of kept going

At the 70km mark of your ride, the remainder looks to be predominantly all uphill, so it's no wonder you're legs were burning.

After riding 70km's at a reasonable pace and then pushing yourself further to ascend the climb your legs will hurt unless you have built them up to cope with this.

The more you do it the more your body will adapt and strengthen, but as the old adage says - it doesn't get easier, you just get faster.

Sadly it's a bit hard not to hill climb where I live

Just keep it up and as mentioned above you will condition your legs to accept more hurt :)

Do you have a heart rate monitor, OzStriker? If so, it can stop you spending too much time doing anaerobic cycling instead of aerobic. Less lactic acid, less "burning your matchsticks". :smile:
