Chainrings

Postby Tim » Tue Sep 11, 2012 7:18 am

I'm hoping somebody knows what's what with small granny gears.
My tourer is fitted with a 74mm BCD, 26 tooth ring on the front. The cranks are made by Sugino and the rings are aluminium. I'd like to change the granny gear to a smaller, ideally, steel 24t ring, for lower gearing and better durability.
I don't know whether all 74mm rings are interchangeable/compatible. The bolt holes on Sugino rings are slightly recessed or countersunk, ie. the top of the bolt sits almost flush with the surface of the ring when fitted. I wonder if all chainrings are the same and if other brands will fit properly?

Difficult to source. You need one of these - the 24T is steel.

I have a Stronglight chainset on my VN Pioneer - it uses the large and small chainring positions for chainguards. The forging mark on the back is XD2, which tells me it was actually manufactured by Sugino. The chainrings are recessed for the bolt heads as you mentioned.

I got the chainset from Dotbike and they were good to deal with. After you order they'll contact you with the shipping price. Ideally for a low cost item like this you should try to combine with other items if possible.

74 BCD rings should be interchangeable provided that they have the same no. of holes...

Stronglight are the only steel ones I've heard of... http://www.stronglight.com/stronglight/ ... yProd=74mm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As for the bolts...not sure. But modern chainring bolts are very low profile so you shouldn't have a big problem if the Sugino bolts don't make great contact.

EDIT: Bloody hell...Ron...you got in there before me! However http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php ... b2s149p244" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; have them for 7 quid but you'd have to email them for shipping charges.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

hehe, sorry about that, but I've done a lot of research into this very subject.

Oh, and Spa Cycles - sure have a lot of stuff but don't try dealing with them unless you are some kind of masochist... :roll: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I run TA Specialities. Zelito is their PCD 74 model - comes in black or silver. Not steel but you can not fault the quality. I have had no problems ordering from these guys in the past.

A couple of 24T choices here: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/74mm-pcd-5-arm-dept495_pg1/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

TA (alloy): http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/ta-74mm-pcd- ... r-prod208/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Stronglight (steel): http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/stronglight- ... -prod3536/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or get a custom job (alloy but super tough)

Thanks heaps fellas.
Think I'll take a punt and order the steel Stronglight. I'd be quite surprised if it doesn't fit.
