I wish to bring out my old beloved Gary Fisher Sugar 1 out of the shed for a work/pub/shop commuter and am looking to throw on a set of slicks.
Order of priority would be;
- Rolling resistance (lack thereof)
- Grip on pavement (off not an issue)
- Wet weather performance (it never rains in Perth)
I have a set of Specialized Fatboy tyres on a spare set of rims for my MTB.
They roll pretty well (much better than any treaded mtb tyre!). Can't remember price but didn’t scare me. Grip is quite good & never used them in the wet. Overall, pretty happy with them.
Before I first succumbed to N+1, life was lived on a Giant XTC. I used THESE for commuting and urban assault. Great boots. (But not on wet grass)
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

I run MAxxis detonatros in 1.5. Roll well, easy to get on and off (not like the cheap Innova 'puncture proof' one that I tried, broke tyre levers on that). Seem to pick up the punctures though. I have had plenty of stell slivers picked up out of the concrete shared path on the commute. Once I put some tyre liners in all was good. If I hadn't got a roadie I was about to go ghetto tubeless on them.
Got the wire bead version cheap and have not had reason to look for another tyre. I have only replaced one after the sidewall blew out after melting from hot exhaust on the back of the car on an interstate trip.

I use Vittoria Randonneurs in the 1.5 variety. They suggest you can pump them up to 95, but I'm using about 85 PSI in them with no worries. Have not ridden on wet grass though...

I've got Continental City Contact 1.75s on my Trailbreaker commuter. With the slicks (although they're not full slicks), I've still been riding boundary fire trails and some single track, you have to be a bit more careful as it's slippery as heck in the middle of winter, but still easily achievable. Riding on the road, no worries, definitely easier than the Cross-Marks I had on there and more puncture proof too. However, I have had a couple of nails and a staple go right through them, but they would have gone through anything.
I have Schwalbe Big Apple 28" tyres at 622 ERTO size on my Scott Spark 29er - awesome on sealed paths and Tarmac....very sketchy on wet paths with river silt after a flood......
They do 60kph on the road but the gyroscopic effects are scary !

I have these, too. Agree about the punctures, though the area I often ride through has a lot of small bits of shattered glass lying around. Will have to try the tyre liners.
I have been using the Serfas Drifters for on and off road and as long as its not to deep they work great.

Both offer very good puncture protection for commuter/city beater bike.
I've been running Continental Top Contacts 42mm for just over 5000kms and have had 1 puncture ver that time so I thoroughly recommend them.
My mate has run Maxxis Detonators and Hutchison slicks on his Giant 26er and swears by both although he did get upset when he felt the weight of the hutchis as his bike normally weighs less than10kg
