Viner Campagnolo build
Postby Dan » Wed Sep 12, 2012 6:55 am
First off, this is not intended to be a perfect or full restoration - more, my first foray into bikes with gears. I briefly considered sourcing used elements, however I found a great deal on a 2011 Veloce groupset through Bike24, so that's what it's getting.
Frame is straight and neat - first job was to degrease, clean and clear coat to prevent any further surface rusting until such time as I can get it painted.
Picked up some Khamsins from Munga, and various other bits and pieces via the ebays, interwebs, etc.
Hope you enjoy - photos to be added shortly.

I'm off to Germany in about 12 weeks though, so might see what I can pick up in person.

Short of a seatpost bolt and some tyres, this could be on the road tomorrow morning.
Yes, that's a poppy tablecloth - what about it?

Cassette on. I initially thought the ramping/alignment looked off, but then realised the cassette can only mount to the freehub in one specific rotational alignment.
Rear Derailleur on. Glory work.
BB Cups in. Chased the threads lightly with an old BB shell - went in smoothly. Yes, that's an apprentice in the background
Crankset in. Some improv required - see below.
I need to improvise a 14mm hex bit for setting the crank bolt - an M10 Hi tensile bolt is slightly over that, so some filing down of each face will give a nice crank setter.
As the cranks are hollow, this will also provide (with appropriately sized washers) a pad against which the gear/crank puller can press for removal of the crank.
Having patience and resisting the urge to rush it all together is difficult, but sensible. Previously I'd have had gear and brake cables hanging all over the place already, and no good can come of that.

Munga re: the group, I considered the silver for a second but then went for stealth instead - the black cranks I got for the single speed confirmed this for me.

Setting the hood/bar levels
Sorting cable routing
Almost there - resisted the urge to denude the Superlite of it's Contis, as some Rubino Pros should arrive today or tomorrow.
In any case, the Viner will be out and about for Rad Retro Raturday Riverloop.
