Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL'sI don't have a poll option but these are the questions:
1) Do you think it's acceptable not to wear a helmet when you ride under the current laws? 2) Do you think it's unnacceptable not to? 3) Do you think it's still optional regardless? Just a simple 1, 2 or 3 will do. I'm very keen to see the results. BTW we already have an MHL thread so if it degenerates into another prospective 2 year debate the mod's will lock this. If you have an opinion please post in that thread. If someone can create the poll proper I'd appreciate it. The only good Cyclist is a Bicyclist

Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL'sEvening all.
Unfortunately, polls can't be created in this sub forum. I'm not going to ask you to respect Daves attempt to get raw data rather than try to wade through multiple pages of back and forth in that other thread. I am demanding it! Simple 1, 2 or 3 responses only. Go loud in that other thread if you feel you must. Transgressors will cop an automatic 24hr suspension upon detection and have a warning placed against their nick. Two warnings equal a permaban. Try me. Shaun ...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL's1) Acceptable.
Aren't options 1 & 3 the same? If you think helmets are optional, obviously you believe that it's acceptable not to wear one. Last edited by lturner on Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL'sOnly because people would rather argue the points till the cows come home? This way you get to make your opinion known - and everyone has a very strong opinion on this - without others wanting to switch off before they've read everything. Win.

Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL's
I'm a 2 as I try to be law-abiding, but would be a 3 if I could. However I think there would be real benefit in adding further questions: 2.1: Do you support MHLs? Yes/No 2.2: If the MHL was repealed, and as an adult: 2.2.1: Would you still always wear a helmet 2.2.2: Would you sometimes not wear a helmet 2.2.3: Would you throw the helmet away 2.3: If the MHL was repealed, and as a parent: 2.3.1: Would your children still always wear a helmet 2.3.2: Would your children sometimes not wear a helmet 2.3.3: Would you throw the kids' helmets away Edit: Fixed numbering Last edited by ILMB on Thu Sep 20, 2012 10:05 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL's
I did a poll on this waaaay back when this subforum allowed polls. IIRC, the result was pretty much a 2.2.2. I'm a solid 1 with the footnote that repealing MHLs will not change my behaviour one bit. ...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL's
Its interesting, I'm honestly unsure how my behaviour would change. I think for recreational / fitness riding I'll continue wearing a helmet 100% of the time. My shorter distance local commutes... Well I think I'd just take the easy option. If the helmet is hanging from the handlebars then I'll probably just throw it on. Though at the moment sometimes I feel it is my obligation to disobey MHLs. If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so. - Thomas Jefferson (Also, I outdoor rock climb regularly and I choose to wear a helmet, not everyone does.) Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL's1)
I see so so many other laws being broken..., Once you can climb hills on a bike it's all downhill.
Hopefully I'll know what that's like..... one day. ![]()
Re: Do you support helmet less riding while we have MHL's1
I think it is acceptable to not wear a helmet under the current laws. Note the word acceptable. Many other things come into consideration: from a moral and political standpoint I do think civil disobedience is reasonable in the face of a law you find unjustifiable but this is a strategy you have to consider in relation to whether the strategy will work or not. While I would continue to support civil disobedience I don't think it would be a successful strategy in this instance. While I may find this acceptable I do wear a helmet for the simple reason that I do not wish to pay the fines, I would get caught as I ride to work every day and mainly ride on roads. Laws should be the servant of the people, not the master. DS Riding: Cannondale Quick Speed 2
