Sandy Bay Cycleway shenanigans

Sandy Bay Cycleway shenanigans

Postby m@ » Mon Sep 17, 2012 2:57 pm

Looks like the Hobart City Council is poised to throw away years' worth of consultation and create a very flawed compromise in order to mollify anti-bike locals...

Bicycle tasmania have a petition going.
There are four phases of bicycle commuting; first there's fear, then rage, then self-righteousness and finally, fun.

Looks like the Mercury has jumped on the bandwagon ... love this comment from Alderman Freeman ..

But Alderman John Freeman said the original proposal was "not a sensible solution".

"The short answer is that Bicycle Tasmania wants a Copenhagen-style solution which is two bicycle lanes and that absolutely destroys Sandy Bay Road -- you can't turn right and it takes all the parking away from one side of the road," he said.

"Keep in mind the roads are paid for by motorists who pay for them through their registration and not the cyclists."

Yep the bloke has always had an agenda against bikes. He is firmly in the big end of towns camp, always has been.

"Sandy Bay Walking and Cycling Project - Community Reference Group (Chair)"

I blame the rest of the councillors for appointing him chair, talk about a stitch up. It would be like appointing Harold Scruby the reins of a consultation group on cycleways. And then being shocked and outraged when he ignores the process and outcome and just does what he thinks is best.

This would not have happened under the former mayor Rob Valentine. The new mayor is only concerned about placating big business and influential aldermen.

A protest ride from Lower Sandy Bay to the city as part of ride to work day was held this morning. It'll be interesting to see the final tally of attendee's, but it appeared to be quite a good turnout.
