Gippsland train station - Wilsons Prom - Route?
Postby bonjour » Tue Sep 18, 2012 4:08 pm
I plan on riding from a train station in Gippsland to Wilsons Prom in one day. Last time I did this I started in Morwell, overnighting in Toora. Due to track work the train only goes as far as Moe. Does anyone have a preferred route noting that obvious "starting" places are Warragul, Yarragon and Trafalgar? I'm happy to hit the South Gippsland Rail trail (noting that the South Gippsland train no longer runs) but would like to avoid extended riding on the Strezelecki Highway and the Grand Ridge Rd. Cheers

If it were Me I'd start from Drouin, take Main South Rd and follow the signs to Poowong, from Poowong I'd take the Bena Poowong rd to the Bass valley rd to Bena and then South Gippy Hwy from there. There are a number of options which will take you From Poowong to Korumburra all are ok except for the Poowong Ranceby rd to Warragul Korumburra rd to Korumburra option which is dangerous. South Gippsland Hwy to Leongatha, rail trail to Fish Creek, Follow the signs to The Prom. It's a big ride but a guy at work has done it a couple of times both times in a day, I'm not sure which way he went but he may have gone from Warragul.

Not much difference between doing it from Moe than from Morwell.

another option is to get ferry to Cowes, Phillip Island, then cycle from there. distance on google maps is similar and it is alot flatter, so should be quicker.
I did this over a few days a few years ago.
there is a rail trail from Anderson to Wonthaggi, then less busy roads to Tidal river

Thanks to all - the topography of the Drouin/ Cowes routes looked easier however the distances were longer and I was not sure whether I would be starting at a decent hour with ferries etc. I took largely backroads from Moe through Yinnar, Boolarra, Mirboo and Foster to the Prom. I didn't think to check for road closures and had to change plans when I found that the Turtons Creek Road was closed and had been for some time. Be aware that there are no shops between Boolarra and Foster. All up a big but beautiful day.
