Information about purchasing a older/vintage cycle

Hi,

I am looking to purchase a road cycle from the 80's. My intention is to strip the entire cycle, clean and re-paint the frame and modernise the parts. I love the look of the 80's cycle's, particularily Peugeot's but want something somewhat modern - the best of both worlds!

I went into a second hand/repair store today looking for a Peugeot and spoke to the man who has been in the cycling scene for several decades at least. I spoke to him about what I wanted to do.

He told me Peugeot cycles were ok but not great. He further told me to look for a Japanese cycle and a top notch one would be similar to a Shogun Samurai. This got me confused as I had an idea in my mind and that blew up.

My question is, are Peugeot frames any good or should I move over to Japanese? Should I look at something else?

I really only need a frame and will then source other components over time. I understand each brand used different types of steel for different levels. I guess I want to know as a whole if Peugeot is any good or should I look at another brand.

I am wanting a weekend cycle...something to ride around with my kids and have fun. I am looking for a racer/road style and don't want to pay more than $200.00 considering I will strip the frame re-build the cycle.

Your help and time is appreciated and will point me in the right direction.

First off head to the Retro part of the forum.
I don't think there's anything wrong with an old Peugeot frame, wouldn't mind one myself.
Check out ebay but I'd recommend being able to inspect in person if possible. The forum classifieds are good.

If you have your heart set on a Peugeot frame then I'd hunt one down. My Godfather still has his Peugeot UO8 10 speed racer from 1980 it's done countless potholed miles and with a little TLC is a 'keep inside the house' bike (He doesn't ride it anymore and the bugger won't let me ride it either........ )

It's a lovely deep emerald green metalic paint colour which was a very popular colour for that frame. His bike still has near perfect polished chrome shiny bits and neat original decals too - I've seen many of them in this emerald green colour around, even these days I spy one at least once / twice a year on my travels. Lovely looking retro steel lugged frame, probably ideal for what you want to build up. I'd try to hunt one down in your size........ very nice bikes IMHO
