a question from a novice
the wife has booked herself and i in for the 50km classic cycle ride from north sydney to homebush
im only new to riding the road bike with clipins and manage ok, im not a speed demon but do a 20-30km ride every 3-4 days at about 24km/h
my question is with so many people am i better off taking the mtb?
easier breaking position and ability to dodge jump obstacles, small children dogs cats drunks in the city etc
from the photos it looks pretty crowded and would hate to amuse others by falling over

I wouldn't.
The first 45 mins or so can be slow and crowded but when it spreads out shortly afterwards you'd wish you had the road bike

Road bike will be fine, last year they released the Spring Cycle in waves. There were still choke points but it is a more social fun ride than an express A to B ride. Use the choke points to chat and find out about all the wierd and wonderful bikes around you.
The route is a little different this year - should be awesome.
If you are at all free for the afternoon check out the real action, the kids races! These little demons are on everything from BMX to mini TT bikes and zip around the same course as the adults - great spectacle and they love getting cheered on!
If you don't have a 'dog' in the race sheer on the LACC riders (black & gold).

At the end of the ride, at SOP, there will be a great criterium carnival run by LACC. The course is different from last year and won't interfere with pedestrians, like last year's one did. The hand cycles will also be racing. Well worth a look.
