Postby Trackspecialist » Mon Oct 15, 2012 9:04 am

Just to get opinions here.
What road bike to buy with a budget of $2,200 for once-a-week ride about 60 km & average speed 22-25 km/h.

A mountain bike should be able to do that average speed on road. Pick one that you think rides nicely, any bike should be able to do that speed assuming a rsonable level of fitness.

Go second hand, given the amount of riding you aim to do. You could get a pretty smart bike for less than your budget. There are always bargains turning up on the market place.

Probably one of the bigger brands such as Giant, Scott, Merida etc, as these are usually solid, reliable, and good value for money.

No point in buying a MTB if he is going to ride it on the road.

Go to a bike shop, tell them your budget and style of bike you want and ask to see and test ride what they have in your budget. Rinse and repeat at several other bike shops with different brands if you can until you find one that is comfortable to ride, has the features you want and you like the look of.

If the OP doesn't know a lot about bikes then they might be better to look at a new bike in a shop where the slaesperson can (hopefully) guide them as to the style and size that they want. With a second hand bike half the components could be worn out or damaged or bike could be the wrong size and the OP may not pick up on these issues if not familiar with bikes. Plis you get twarranty and often a free first service when buying a new bike at a shop.

You make valid points. The reason I suggest the market place here for second hand is most are 3000 km old bikes that are getting replaced due to upgraditis. :D

My point was more than almost any bike will be suitable for the task specified, not that an MTB would be more suitable.

The rider should choose something that suits based on fit, comfort and features rather than looking at a road bike and being talked into a race bike with an uncomfortable geometry. $2200 will buy a fair bit of bike in any style.

Plus one for under quoting ouour budget by 10-20%, you will either get a bargain or some extra accessories of or your money and won't be talked into spending more than you wanted in the first place.
