ride food for amine salycilate intolerant people

Postby juggs » Mon Oct 15, 2012 10:30 pm

I have a pretty severe intolerance to foods with amines and salicylates.
amines cause me stomach issues salicylates put me into anaphylaxis

on 20-30km rides im fine, but i am doing a 50km ride this weekend for the first time and am wondering what i should take to eat
as an example for fruit im stuck with pears with the skin off that is literally the only fruit i can eat

anyone else suffer the same issues ?

Juggs, With my son i try to not to feed him foods containing salicylates as it can affect his behaviour making him scatty - see if you can try some golden delicious apples, which are low in amines. While they have some salicylates, the amount is about half that of red delicious apples and about a seventh of a granny smith apple. Try the apple without the skin firstly. Failing that, maybe try paw paw (fresh, the dried stuff has increased amines) and mango or tamarillos. We also get a pear jam for putting on sandwiches for school - although it is best to make this yourself to ensure the skin isn't mixed up with the pear. As you probably know, the pear skin has all the salicylate in it. Pear jam is rediculously hard to find from the shops and when you do find it (places like a deli) it is hideously expensive. Good luck with it, having the double whammy of salicylate & amine intolerance is a bummer.

I've had similar issues now for around 5 years. I'm off my bipolar medication so I can try Asimax for upper intestinal relief and have been taking them for a week.
My face is clearing and it hasn't reacted to anything I've eaten for a few days now, and digestion is returning to normal. Have you tried it? Could be worth a shot in addition to your current diet. It may not do anything for you but it's turned me around very quickly. The weight has finally started to budge this week as well :)

My boy also has intolerances to both amines and salycilates - affect his behaviour in a big way.
Have you looked at the DIY Gels. They are basically carbs, salt and flavour, so maybe use glucose, pear syrip from tinned pears(?), citric acid for flavour...
There are a few "failsafe" food blogs around that may have some info you could use. I'll look at some of the stuff I have at home to see if there is any more help there.

thanks guys

ill have a read up

yeah sucks to have both 3 ears of only water todate with the occasional whiskey.
it started happening 6-7 years ago and peaked when i had a bottle of wine and a cuddle with the missus in the shower, only to wake up with two paramedics dragging me out of the shower.
i then got bumped round the hospital system.
heart specialist - you have terminal intestinal cancer.
alergist - no alergies nothing wrong with you.
dieticians at rpa (awesome people) you have food intolerance, we dont see many adults so sorry all the diagrams are kids picture books lol.

i have a comfortable base line diet abeit boring as hell, but i dont have excess energy in it to do big rides.
its quite borderline in decent nutrition so i have to be careful with the carbs sugars.

G'day Juggs,

I have PM'ed you a few Failsafe style recipie links.
Sue Dengate and the Failsafe mob plus the RPAH allergy unit are awesome.

Some guys I know who do marathon kayaking for 12-14 hours at a time only use gels and/or sports drinks when on the go, so these may be your best option. I couldn't find much more info at home unless you want some muffin/muesli bar recipes.
