Heart rate while cycling

Postby boss » Fri Oct 12, 2012 10:40 am

Hi all,

Recently got myself a garmin + HRM, been fairly interested in tracking what my heart is doing.

My stats:
  • 27
  • 65-70kg
  • 5'10
  • Ride to work everyday, variety of bikes
(For the last 5-6 years I have commuted between 6 and 20k's on a BMX, but about three months ago I bought a single speed, and then a few weeks back I bought a roadie. Nowadays it is around 3 days / 45ks on BMX and 2-3 days / 150-200ks on my roadie)
  • Max heart rate 183BPM (It may be slightly higher, but I was working pretty hard to get 183BPM)
  • Resting heart rate between 55-60BPM depending on conditions
I've noticed that on my shorter rides (<30km) I'm able to sit at 170-180BPM without too much fuss. I'm pushing myself, definitely, but it's not hurting.

Is that weird?

Stopping at traffic lights etc, my HR will drop down to 100-120 within a minute judging from the garmin readouts.

Be interested to hear what other peoples tickers are doing!

totally normal! i was exactly the same, i would average 150-160 on my rides of about the same distance with my heart rate around 160-170 whilst riding. now on the same routes going much faster i average about 120-130. you will find it gets lower as it gets easier!

I did a race once where my AVERAGE hr for an hour and a half was 190. On a normal ride i'm usually on 170ish.

No, but it does mean your actual HRmax is higher than you think it is. You just haven't discovered it yet.

Keep in mind that HR response is individual and is not indicative of fitness nor performance potential.

IOW two riders with same HR response can be at totally different levels of fitness (both absolute and relative), likewise two equally fit riders can have totally different HRs.

I seem to sit on between 145-165 during most rides usually speeds between 28-40 km/h.
Resting HR is in the mid-40s
Maxxed my HR doing reps up this. Hit 193 at the peak.

Though I'm a bit bigger than you. 6'3 82kg and 26 years. Not sure how much affect that would have on the stats.

Heading up hill for an extended period of time is what really sends my HR up, I'm no climber.

You were right.

I hit 193 today, had it pinned at 186 on a spirited 4km uphill segment.

ive just started to get into riding over the last 2 months,

when riding in a group and we really start pushing my heart beat is going over 200 but im not hurting, and the only way I know about it is when i check the garmin upload at the end of the ride

I'm 191cm 118kg and 32 years of age!

i'm riding around 20km to and from work , or around 25kms every other day

Im only hitting over the 200 bpm when i'm up around the 35km to 40 km /h

the hightest i've hit is 220 bpm, but as soon as we slow down my heart beat drops back
?
does anyone else hit this sort of bpm with similar body size?

220 bpm sounds like you might be seeing FJS - flapping jersey syndrome. This is a well known issue for Garmin HRM and is a false reading. If you are seeing it when going fast down hills then its definitely it.

I've seen those sort of numbers on a couple of rides, likely to be an equipment issue but i asked my gp and he said so long as it doesn't stay there for long it should be right.

well that's good, it was while i was going up hill, but if there's known issues, I havn't in the last 2 weeks seen over 180bpm average normally is max 165bpm when pushing, it's come down alot since I first started riding!

thanks for the info I did freak me out a little!

My highest was something like 245 on the Garmin HRM... (on a really windy afternoon).

But with proper readings, I generally see around 180bpm as a max and around 150bpm average.

been speaking with a mate that's into racing and does a lot of riding,

He's adviced that I start riding to heart beat so I can get a full weeks riding in with out killing myself, so this morning I kept my heatbeat between 120 and 140 only, and slowed down if it went over 140, the ride took 5 min longer than normal, but didn't feel half as stuffed, and still managed a 29km/h average! so i'll see how that goes for the week! I've been off the pushie for 4 days due to work, but having 4 days of is the first time in 2 months that my legs havn't been hurting me
