Pro3race a very good tyre

If you look in the flat tyre comp, you will see that I'm winnings, but those flats were all on other brands including tyres that supposedly have good puncture protection.

PR3s are a wonderful, wonderful handling and riding tyre but let's just say they are best kept for race day.

That's exactly what I thought, I put some on my race bike and then I got some for my fixie, which I commute on and I haven't had a flat since. I find it surprising, but that's what happened.scirocco wrote:The fact that there is even a discussion about Prorace 3s and flats should set your alarm bells ringing.

Also - Cell has the new Panaracer Race Type D's in stock at a bargain price ($<40). I only had 11 punctures until the start of Sept on the previous version of the tyre, once I ran out of stock I've had another eight punctures in six weeks. I'm hoping the Race D has the same qualities as the extreme duro.

I think you maybe onto something Twizzle - I've found Pro Race 3's to be puncture magnets, several guys in my club have used them and retired them prematurely due to constant punctures.twizzle wrote:Mike - could your tyres be 'aged' by any chance?

+1. Some guys I ride with regularly have Pro Race 3s and they seem to get frequent punctures. It's a race tyre not a training tyre.jacks1071 wrote:I think you maybe onto something Twizzle - I've found Pro Race 3's to be puncture magnets, several guys in my club have used them and retired them prematurely due to constant punctures.twizzle wrote:Mike - could your tyres be 'aged' by any chance?

Anything which isn't referred to as a "green tyre", I guess. And it's probably dependant on how the rubber is cured. Back in the "'ol days", people supposedly mounted the tubs but left them for at least six months before using them if they wanted them to be durable.mikesbytes wrote:What's the definition of aging? I suspect they are old stock, as they have been replaced with Pro4race

Every tire I have every used always seems to be less puncture resilient and last longer if it has at least a year 'curing' before use.

Gotta theory on the whys of this?
I'd like to hear how it's done too if that's no problem.
Thanks

It may also depend on the compounds. I'm guessing that aging was more relevant in days gone bytwizzle wrote:Anything which isn't referred to as a "green tyre", I guess. There was a good write up... unfortunately mainly as an obit., in Ride a few editions ago. Something along the lines of left under the bed for six months, then mounted and slowly inflated in stages over the next six months while still under the bed. Guy who wrote the article was saying that it still seems to work because he had some tyres that were crap (cuts) and he stopped buying them them... then about a year later ended up using a couple he had left over and they weren't crap any more.Mulger bill wrote:Interesting...jcjordan wrote:I am a big fan of aging.

However, it is a race tyre after all. I wouldn't leave a negative review if being asked.

But it is a thin well priced race tire so I am not complaining.

I have no scientific evidence for my belief other then personal experience.
Interesting...

I have quite a few write ups in various places which led me to try this.
One of the write ups mentioned that when rubber comes out of the factory it takes a while for some of the chemicals used in its production to evaporate off which hardens the rubber.

- New tyres (with thicker rubber) are less likely to puncture.
- Temporally there may have been a change in riding style.
- Temporally there may have been a change in routing.
- Temporally there may have been a change in council street sweep program.
- Temporally there may have been a personality change due to various work, interpersonal and personal factor.
OR, GOD loves ya!

Having a set of new tires ready and waiting is always a good thing in my opinion.Mulger bill wrote:Thanks jcj, happy to listen to experience.

I have had a number of incidents when I have found a in use which is dead, or on the verge, with no time to get to the shop before the ride the next day.

Bizzare the lack of flats I'm having. It's making me think about buying a batch of them and storing them
Still available under $30 each http://pedallershub.com/search?keyword=pro+3+race
