Rear Sprocket removalCan't do it
Any suggestions welcome.
Re: Rear Sprocket removalI think it was Sheldon brown that suggested put the tool in a vice and use the wheel to undo it rather than a spanner.
bychosis (bahy-koh-sis): A mental disorder characterised by symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impaired contact with reality not containing bicycles.
Re: Rear Sprocket removalI like sheldon's idea. But I've got this set:
![]() works really well (use it all the time)
Re: Rear Sprocket removalIt's not spinning, or budging for that matter. The wheel and all it's components don't seem rusty at all so it's got me beat at the moment. I have a vice a work so I may try that.
Re: Rear Sprocket removalI bought a second hand wheel and could not get the sprocket off it. I tried my chain whip, and a vice, it still would not budge.
Then I bought one of these: http://i872.photobucket.com/albums/ab288/mickho/PedrosViseWhiptool.jpg Pedros make it, was designed by Leonard Zinn. An example of true genius, what an amazing world we live in.
Re: Rear Sprocket removal
so i gather it locks into the smaller sprockets? awesome
Re: Rear Sprocket removal
That looks way cool. Is the point of it to apply as much force as possible and where did you get it from?
Re: Rear Sprocket removalIt locks onto the cassette so that you have a firm hold.

Re: Rear Sprocket removal
Thanks very much.
Re: Rear Sprocket removal
Thats the way to go. Took wheel to work, tool in vice and 5 seconds later. Voila!
Re: Rear Sprocket removal
My commuter had a cassette that I could not remove, not sure why as I use a torque wrench to tighten to correct setting. Tried and tried and bent the chain whip so it was useless. I bought the Pedros tool but have found its not long enough. For a really tight lockring you cant get enough leverage on it. I ended up putting a steel bar on the end of it and off came the cassette. Its good, but could be better with a longer lever arm. Would I buy again? Well I was not going to get the cassette of any other way, but for the price it could be better.
Re: Rear Sprocket removalI use standard 1/2" square drive rear cassette removal socket.
Hook it up to a 30cm standard car breaker bar for the hard one. Never fail.
