Difference between Garmin edge 500 blue and red bundles

Postby janus77 » Thu Oct 25, 2012 10:32 am

There's about a $30 price difference, I think it's because with the red you get a coded HRM so that you're less likely to get interference.

Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

thanks. Was only wondering as my regular training buddy has an edge 800, it would be a bummer to have interference on our rides..

Sorry to throw a stick in your spokes but you can get the blue edge 500 with premium HRM too.

Personally I can't comment on the standard strap but my premium HRM strap is coded and therefore doesn't get confused with other peoples straps.

I have heard about issues with the premium strap but mine seems to be doing fine about 4 weeks in.

My premium strap is about 3 months in and has just started playing up as the weather warms. In the cooler weather I have been wearing it under either a cotton shirt or form fitting (ie non flapping) polypropylene thermal top. Now that I have been wearing a flapping polyester cycling jersey directly over the top of the hr strap it has started giving wildly high readings. I am wondering if the flapping polyester jersy is generating static electricity and thus affecting the hr reading. :?: :?

One thing to remember is to wash your strap. Otherwise you will get problems over time.

Just a note to all who are having problems with premium heart rate strap.

Mine was having all sorts of issues - sometimes not reading, other times picking up a reading and holding it for 15 minutes then changing to another reading for the next 15 minutes (and no, I don't have that sort of control over my heart rate), other times picking up really high readings (ie average 180 max 230 - and I know those readings were wrong although it did give me a little fright).

I tried everything - washing the strap, making sure that my jersey was not flapping, wetting the contact points. NOTHING worked.

And then I read a tip to move the strap around so that the transmitter was under your arm (ie attachment clip in the middle of your chest). Tried it and ever since I have had no problems. :D

Maybe my heart is located in a different location to other people

my premium strap plays up, have worked out washing it with detergent works for a while. I have been thinking about getting a polar strap for it.

as for pairing, once you turn your garmin on and providing there is no other hrm around it will pair with your device and ignore all other devices

Yarra, spin the strap around so the clip is in the middle of your chest (with transmitter under your arm). Don't know why, but it works and should solve your problems....

Had a crack at that yesterday and it didn't work under the left arm for me. How close to the arm pit do you run the transmitter?

I have it at the normal height (just under the chest). see the attached links for a picture of how one guy solved his problems (also included a troubleshooting guide - this is how I solved my issues, with the moving of the strap the last tried and ultimately successful solution).

Thanks for the reply and link. I might be able to get hold of some ultrasound gel and try that.

Personally I rather the standard HRM strap. I sold the premium strap, and my red 500 has worked flawlessly with the std one for 6 months...
