finished off the GIANT CFR that I picked up from Lachlan off this forum
I runs a full 105 9 speed groupset (but running a Tiagra FD as I couldn't locate the braze on clamp holder - if anyone has one drop me a PM and I'll take it off your hands 8) )
It's a lovely bike and my parter loves riding it to work

Good to see another resto of a CFR. They're quite a nice ride (I have a CFR2) and can fly along!

The front der on mine has captive screws (moulded into the CF) holding a stainless steel mount that the braze on style FD screws to. The mount is basically a small shaped piece of stainless that takes the place of a brazed on mount on a steel frame, but it's screwed on.

Very nice. What year range, roughly? And what's the frame material/tubing? Certainly a cut above my now-moved-on Perigée, which was labelled Perigeé, incorrectly. But I digress. Probably French not big in Taiwan. :|
Well, no, it's not a pushbike, otherwise I'd be pushing it...

Carbon tubes with aluminium lugs; aluminium fork. My CFR2 is a 1992 I think that one's about a 1994-1995. Mine weighs 9.3kg complete and factory stock with full 7 speed 105, which isn't bad (it's a bit bigger than the one above).

Just thought I'd dump this lot on you all. As far as I can research Giant built the CFR's from 93 to 96, in 97 they went with the Mike Burrows designed compact frame (aluminium), Giant didn't do CF road bike frame for a few years after 97 (TCR in '03 I think from memory).

Here's a spec list of most of the models of CFR's-

93 CFR 1 ID # 42646
Lugged CF frame
Aluminium fork
600 STI 8speed Groupset
Vetta Saddle
Scott LF bars
600 Seatpost
600 hubs
Campagnolo Omega Aero 32h rims

93 CFR 2 ID # 43767
as per the 1 except
105 STI 8 speed groupset
Kalloy seatpost
105 hubs

93 CFR 3 ID # 44888

as per the others except
105 D/T 8 speed groupset
Polygon seatpost
Modolo 6 bend bars
105 hubs
Campagnolo Omicron rims

94 CFR 1 ID # 17072
Lugged CF frame
Aluminium fork
600 STI 8 speed groupset
Control Tech seatpost
San Marco Concur Lite seat
Modolo 8Q Even bar
600 hub
Campagnolo Omega V Hardox rims

94 CFR 2 Unfortunately I have no information on this model, if someone has the details of groupsets etc. I'd like a copy.

94 CFR 3 ID # 17073
as per the 1 except
Campagnolo Stratos Ergo STI 8 speed groupset
Kalloy seatpost
TTT Podium Ergo bars
Stratos hubs
Campagnolo Omicron rims.

95 CFR 1 ID # 34064 Candy Blue Electric
CF lugged frame
Aluminium fork
600 STI 8 speed groupset
Kalloy 27.2mm seatpost
San Marco Strada C seat
TTT 8Q Even bars
600 hubs
Rigida DP-18 32h rims
1.8mm straight guage spokes

95 CFR 2 ID # 34065 Candy Red Fade
as per the 1 except
105 STI 8 speed groupset
Kalloy 27.0mm seatpost
San Marco Slim seat
Modolo anatomic bars
105 hubs

95 CFR 3 again I have no data sheet for this, if anyone has I'd like a copy.

96 CFR 1 ID # 54340 Red
Bonded CF frame
Mike Burrows EXT CF fork
600 STI 8 speed groupset
Kalloy 27.2mm seatpost
San Marco Strada seat
Giant alloy bars
600 hubs
Rigida DP-18 Aero 32h rims
2.0mm straight guage spokes.

96 CFR 2 ID # 50106 Light Blue
as per the 1 except
105 STI 8 speed groupset
105 hubs

96 CFR 3 ID # 57703 Dark Blue
as per the 1 except
RSX STI 7 speed groupset
Viscount saddle

And just one more CFR built-

the 96 CFR Pro-Series
Bonded CF frame
Mike Burrows EXT Pro CF fork
600 STI 8 speed groupset
Mike Burrows EXT Pro CF seatpost
Fi'zi'k Lite seat
Giant Aero stem
Cinelli bars
600 hubs
Rigida DP-18 Aero 32h rims
2.0mm straight guage spokes.

These bikes (in Australia) were issued to the Australian & State Institute of Sports, plus the ZVVZ/AIS Continental Cycling Team, they were all the same colour scheme.

My one was a QLD Institute of Sports bike but the frame was too big for any of their cyclists, the shop I rode for around the time was run by the former Qld Giant rep, this was the bike that I raced for them. Best result was 13th in the 98 World Masters Championships (got dropped off the lead bunch on the final climb).
It features the much maligned Mike Burrows EXT Pro CF aero front wheel (off the 97 TCR), I no longer have the rear as it did what most of them did, self destruct, the front has been relaced with a Velocity rim (am interested if anybody has a Burrows EXT Pro rear wheel).

Wal, I'm fairly sure mine is a 1992, and also, the spec is definitely 7 speed from the factory. My bike was delivered brand new to my brother, and has barely been ridden (so the spec is original) because it was an insurance replacement and he was put off bikes because of the accident, so I bought it off him only a couple of years or so ago. Nothing has been changed except the saddle and bar tape - it had just sat there for years.

By the way, I think the rims are Shimano too, anodised to match the 105 hubs.

I just had a quick Google around and there's a fair bit of evidence that they first appeared in 1992 and that some were 7 speed. Maybe they changed to 8 speed in the 1993 model year?

Looks good ACT! :D . As for age, when i picked it up it had a 1995 dated RSX crank arm on it. I actually got it from a LBS, an old bloke had brought it in asking if they were interested in buying it, as they are mainly a family/cruiser type shop they weren't, but told him they had a regular customer who would probably be able to use it :) . The previous owner had butchered the extractor threads and i ended up having to put in several hours work cutting the thing off. The wheels it came with were Formula sealed bearing hubs laced to Velocity Aerohead rims, missing several spokes (i'll get round to replacing them eventually).

Interested to hear about those wheels wal, i never knew they had a habit of exploding, just that they were bloody hideous :) .

I forgot to add; the groupset on mine has the Shimano date code of P_ which is 1991.

Sorry to reply to such an old post, but actually I found here in germany this very nice Giant CFR Pro Series frame from 1999/97. I found out in the internet, that for example the german driver Jens Voigt started his career on a buke lke this - cool. My frame needs a setpost with 27.0 mm diameter !

Kind regards from germany, Michael
