Cycling Shoes - Advise

Hi Guys,

Sort of new to cycling, and looking for my first pair of cycling shoes for a road bike.

The bike has Time RXS Carbon Pedals, have seen some use, I've worked out the cleats I need ( Time RXS pedal cleats), and am now working out what shoes to go for. BTW do I need to buy just Time RXS pedal cleats or other cleats, which seem to look similar, would do as well???

As the pedals and cleats are Time ( assuming I buy time cleats), am i locked into shoes also from the same make?

I see Shimano and Sidi seem to be a popular brand for shoes.

I was looking at spending around 100$, and I guess the main criteria would be ease of use and comfort, I only do around 10 - 20 K in a go, at this stage, so am not looking at very high end shoes, and weight of the shoe whilst important, may not be the top item. Clipping in and out of the pedal probably would be of the greatest importance to me at this stage.

Am looking at getting them, along with some other items from Wiggle .

Any suggestions / advise would be most appreciated

I would suggest dumping the Time pedals and buy a set of these

An excellent combo for a beginner.

SPD's are a better all round pedal/shoe combo especially the m520 anti suggested as they are double sided and just a bit easier to use in traffic etc.

Except don't dump the time pedals, they will come in handy later if you get into road cycling more.

Or you could sell the Time pedals to help fund. I'm sure someone would be interested

Have gone ahead with time cleats n shoes for now, lets see how they work out

If I find these cleats / pedals too cumbersome will look at other options.

Good choice. Time pedals are fantastic. Which shoes did you get?

They had time Rxi shoes on wiggle, a tad more expensive than the shimano 77 but looked better, had good reviews, so went with them.

I'm sure the whole time setup will work fine, once I get used to cleats n shoes etc I can always improve over time.

Make sure you spend some time clicking in and out while at home. Jean against a wall to do it. That will get you used to the movement and give you confidence when on the road. Also, you can unclip bu twisting your heel outwards or inwards. The norm is outwards, but I found I was more comfortable twisting inwards so I've been doing that for 5 years or more.

That's a nice looking shoe! I kinda wish my new Bontrager shoes had the black strip over the toe - a couple of toe overlap issues has left some unsightly rubber marks on mine.

Once the N + 1 syndrome kicks in and you buy an MTB I can highly recommend the Time ATAC MTB pedals as well. It's just a shame that they aren't making Aliums any more.
