Vintage, yesteryear and retro biking
by tripstobaltimore » Thu Nov 01, 2012 8:43 pm
I picked up a 1991 Eddy Merckx Strada in Team Wienmann replica colours from the forum a little while back, and thought I'd do a bit of a build thread. Frame is in reasonable knick, fair bit of patina but straight and no major issues. Considered restoring the paint, but will leave as is atm. Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr Bars are 3TTT competizione tour de france, with a NOS 3TTT synthesis stem. Levers are Shimano 600 I believe (also NOS). Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr Going for the dura ace 7400 groupset (in keeping with the age of the frame). The brake levers are basically NOS. Apparently used, but definitely dont look it. Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr Shifters are dura ace 7 spd. 8 spd would probably be closer to the vintage of this bike, but I wanted to go down tube shifters, and 8 spd DA are hard to find. Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr Dura ace 7402 RD, which looks brand new from the front, but has a few scratches on the rear of the cage. Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr And lightly used (with some light typical crank arm scratches) cranks Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr Have also got some polished up 7 spd DA hubs to be built into wheels. Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr So as you can see I've been going to a close to NOS/near new component level. I still need some items - seat post, wheels, cassette, chain, BB and the FD on is a 7700, so will replace that eventually. If anyone has any of these available, feel free to let me know. Thinking white bar tape and white seat would go nicely. Will update when more parts are purchased. Alan

Those paint colours. What were they tripping on in raging Belgium in the day? But, I like 'em.
Ever noticed how quiet steel bikes are?

Hi Alan, Clamp on Front Deraileur? 32 hole rims? I think the DA seatpole you will be looking for is SP-7400? You think 8s down tube shifters are rare ..... PM sent.

Thanks, the photos really don't do it justice. Odd colour scheme, but it really works. Will look great complete I reckon.

3ttt competizione bars.
Quick question for anyone out there - can I use current shimano compatible brake and gear cables? Will the cable end fit properly into the brake and gear levers?
Cheers

Cable away - no issues that I'm aware of. Off topic - the frame looks in better condition than your carpet :O
I ride 25s on the basis that they divide more easily into 100 than 23s.

Hmm, okay, not sure where it went. I PM'd you that I had some nice 32h pairs of period rims, but they're no good to you. I suggest some silver Velocity A23s as you might struggle to find a period matching 32/36 pair. If you need a good wheelbuilder, let me know ....

I've also got a blue corsa extra im building up with DA EX gear (which will be finished before this one...). Its a lovely frame. I also want to get an MXL at some stage. I love the 7-eleven colours too. Will hopefully own one of them one day too haha Small update - BB has arrived, pic of bike with cranks mounted. Have some rims (open pro's) and spokes on the way, will build up the rim when they arrive. Untitled by tripstobaltimore, on Flickr
