Don't just go purely by weight..many things affect this such as muscle mass, water retention etc.

How you look and feel also count for a lot.
I hope this is the case - scale says I have gained 2kg, but am feeling much fitter and can see places where fat has slowly melted off and been replaced by muscle.

Vegemite and cheese with what?
Sorry, should've proofread. I meant sandwiches. Sometimes I can get leftovers, and occasionally ill buy a chicken and salad sandwich. Perhaps I should prepare some stuff in bulk at the start of the week so each morning it'll be quicker.

Dear all,

Forgive me as I have sinned.

I was down at 100kgs April 2011, and maintained that weight within a few kgs till i moved up here to darwin.

now i am 108kgs.

I promise to do more exercise and get fit again. Riding is a bit harder up here due to wet season, but im still spinning the legs by taking the dog for a run on the bike.

I want to be under 100kgs by xmas.

Thought I might join in too; albeit it late to the party...

I got back on my bike one year ago, after having been off it for ten years...

Start weight September 2011: 118kg
One year later I am: 102kg
Goal weight is 85kg
I am 42 and 5'8"

I rode heaps as a kid and as a young adult. Rode Brisbane to Rocky for a week holiday when I was 23 (I purchase my Shogun) for that ride.

I knew I loved riding, and that I would be better for me than jogging (knees) and gym duties (mental health - boredom)...

So, I started riding to work. 27km each way last year. Once a week to start with and then built up...

I moved into the inner suburbs in 2012 which reduced the commutes, but I slowly learnt about all the awesome rides in here, including river loop, gateway loop, and mt cootha.

I also did the "tour de lounge" this year, doing 1500km on the indoor trainer and raised a few hundred dollars for charity.

Then one of my mates from work really got me moving. We did Samford to Mee and back (100k), Nudgee Beach and back (50k), Mt Nebo and back (55k) and the Redlands Ride (100k)... Gold Coast this Sunday...

In total, over the last year, I have ridden 3850kms on the Shogun. I feel fitter, healthier and happier. I am better at work, and I am more actively engaged with my kids.

To think only 12 months ago, I could barely walk up a set of stairs without losing my breath and I could not chase my kids around the yard...

Life is better and I have never loved cycling more...

I now have applied the n+1 rule and have added a new sora based road bike to my collection and I look forward to pedaling away the next 10kg...

My ultimate goal is to reach that 85 kg weight and to get myself an Ultegra based road bike and be able to attack hill climbs like Nebo and Mee like the fit riders do!!!
Loving my Merida's and working towards adding a Pinarello to the stable... Go go go...

Great weight loss  16kg in 12 months. I managed a similar amount, but over 18 months (102 kg down to 80 kg)

Cost a fortune in clothing. Had to replace just about everything apart from shoes & socks.

I'd expect you're in a similar situation with the eventual outcome being a mass clothing give away & cutting the end off all your belts + adding about 6 more holes.

I noticed you're riding in similar locations to where my Wife & I ride.

Perhaps if you'd like a little more incentive we do a few interesting training sessions late afternoons/early evenings at the Nundahdome crit track starting near Brookside shopping centre. Keeps us off the roads at peak-hour staying on the KBB (Kedron Brook Bikeway) all the way there & back.

Shoot me a PM if interested :)

102 down to 80 I imagine is much harder as you are getting down to optimal weights... That last kilo must be exponentially harder...

Will drop you a PM... Still learning about all the cool places to ride on the northside... I am such a south side boy...

I hear you about the wardrobe dramas! I've lost quite a bit and have had to replace 80% of my clothes!

On the plus side, I'd kept a dozen cool t shirts that were new but all mediums! Kerching!
And I purchased my first pair of 32 inch trousers today in 20 years...I'm having a beer to celebrate...

great stuff mate.

I haven't been on this forum much this year, but I was a similar start weight to you last year and have a goal weight of 89kgs too. At 188cm, I reckon that's a good healthy weight. I saw 101kgs last week and can't wait to crack the "tonne". 10 years of happy marriage and 20+ kgs... I'll keep the missus, but would like the weight gone.

Hey all,

I've been trying to get myself in better shape these last few months. I'm a 30yo bloke, 5'10" and of slight build (muscle? What muscle?!). A lazy winter followed by a month in the UK in July (with all the eating and boozing that implies, I blame my mum for the former and my younger brother for the latter!) had me overweight and completely unfit. I weighed myself when I got back from hols, at the beginning of August I was 74.5kg. Am currently 66.7kg, so nearly 8kg lost in 4.5 months which I'm pretty happy about. Saw some pictures of me taken in late July the other day and had to do a double take!

Feeling much better now than then, which is great. I've been trying to get as much riding in as possible (usually 4 days/250ish km per week) and got my fitness back to where it was pre-winter fairly quickly. Gains since then have been slower, but am still improving. I've cycled in one form or another since I was about 13, but had a revelation recently about just how much happier I am in general when I'm riding frequently, so the plan is to base build and hopefully be fit and fast by, say, 35.

Not sure what my target weight is. I've never been "race weight" before, but I'm guessing that would be about 60kg. Probably won't get there though... I need to work on my diet I guess. I work full time and do evening work three nights a week. Add in riding both weekend days and group rides+commute rides on the two weekdays I don't work in the evening, and I'm time poor and knackered, which doesn't lend itself to spending time on cooking. Anybody got tips for the time poor and culinarily inept?

Am also wondering how I'm going to go at Christmas. Intend to still ride through the break, but I haven't been drinking much lately, will do my best not to go too overboard and undo the good work.

One more question for you - how do you control appetite after riding? On group ride+commute days, I do about 50km in the morning (at a pace I find hard). By 9am I've usually eaten my lunch and seem to continue eating at regular intervals until I've had lunch. I can partially explain that by the fact I only have time for two pieces lot toast before I leave the house in the morning, but still...

Lots of hard work in here with impressive results, congrats to all!

My story:
Age 38
Height 178cm

At 18yo I was 55kg (pretty sick at the time though with Crohn's disease)
...fast forward a lot of years and chips & chocolate...
Aug 2011 - 86kg
Mar 2012 - 76kg
...then went for a long overseas holiday which included france and the bakery & indian bits of the UK
15th Oct 2012 - 80kg
17th Dec 2012 - 74.1kg

Goal is 70kg by Mar 2013. And probably could do with losing a couple more after then too, about 67-68kg is probably the right amount for my body shape. Whether I have changed my lifestyle enough to stay that way once I hit the goal is another matter...

Since october, I found getting from 80kg down to about 77kg really really hard work, but since then it has gotten much easier. Either I'm used to the reduced food intake and being more controlled, but also I have been doing more km per week too. 6 cootha's a week = ~150g of fat per week, just for 13km of riding! Then you add all the other km on top... Now whenever I'm eyeing some kind of deliciously disgustingly tempting piece of food, I calculate how many cootha's I have to do if I eat it, and almost always decide I'd rather not eat it because I've developed a real love/hate relationship with cootha... I hate going up it. On the way up I decide I'm not going to do it again, ever. When I get to the top I turn around and head straight back down for another go :)

cracked the "tonne" this morning. Weighed myself twice to make sure! 98.7 & 99.9kgs dripping wet after my river loop ride. I think it's been 10 years since I was under 100kgs, but importantly I've shifted 20kgs in the past 2 years, 10 in the last 3 months.

Next goal is 95 and then hopefully 89kgs before I turn 40 in 16 months time.

Nice to hear someone in a similar situation achieving their goal too. Sub 1 kilonewton is a great feeling.
Well done, we'll be fighting at light-heavyweight soon enough!

Yeah I'm the same. Having to even replace my belts, which i didn't expect. I don't think I have any pants that fit me at the moment. Most are gathered in. Not quite at 36", but 38" is a little large.

I'm intentionally not buying new stuff till I drop down further. Swinging between 98-99 at the moment after easing up the discipline on the diet. Will see what happens over Christmas, but would be nice to be under 95 for cootha challenge in march.

Anyone up for 2013 Losers Club? I am often referred to as a 'big unit' and hoping riding will help me get back to health in 2013! Started at 118 kegs on the 1st and looking to get below the century by 1 April.

Anyone can start it up, so go for it. Just PM one of the mods and we can make it a sticky for you and unstick this one at the same time.

edit: 'tis done. 2013 version created and stickied.
