Mr Cook's apology letter he discusses some alternative apps, not all of them are available to Australian customers though and they're all navigation apps. I've been using Maps on iOS 6 in the greater Perth area and have yet to have a navigation issue.
The area that is letting it down is POI's. In Google Maps you can type a business name or other point of interest into the search bar instead of a street address and get a reliable result. The same is not true of Maps. Many POI's aren't in its database and the ones that are can be out of date. My own office is a case in point, Maps has a listing for it but it’s the address we left 5 months ago. I've updated the Yelp listing (which is apparently Apple's source for most of its POI data) but it has yet to flow through to Maps. Updating my business details on Google resulted in an instant fix. In the iOS app sphere there doesn't seem to be an alternative to compete with Google Maps.
