Has anyone tried pedal-based power meters?

I'd like to hear your experience with them. I'm interested to get measurements of variations in torque and speed within one pedal revolution and to find out if one leg is stronger than the other, over a range of different cadences and power outputs.

In order to forestall predictable comments, I did not say that I need this data for effective training. I said I am interested. I am already happy with my training methods but the possibility of measuring these variations piques my scientific curiosity.

Keep in mind that asymmetry is normal, and it varies depending on a range of things (cadence, relative and absolute power output, fatigue, type of riding/position).

not much as you would be sure to have heard about ... Last statement was a long time ago. We also haven't seen any prototypes been used anywhere... And you can be sure if they had they would pop up somewhere online.
Maybe they are just keeping tight now until they actual have something worthwhile instead of the joke it has become.

It seems the Vector has proved to be far more difficult to transfer from working prototypes to reliable, accurate mass market production units than the makers thought.

Even then you are confined to a particular pedal type, which may or may not be preferable.

If they did actually get it working properly... at 1300€ ( 1600€ ) for a pedal!, how often will it have to go back for a rebuild. I only get a year out of a set of pedals on average. Plus one of the first things to hit in an accident. Too much money sitting out there on the side of my bike for me.

Ive never had to replace pedals... Also the rrp is 1500 for the pair, so less than a quarq/srm. Also the ability to go between track bike/road bike/ time trial bike is unbeatable.

Not only that, but proprietary it seems. I can't see anything about ANT+ and the site says its compatible only with 2 Polar computer models

It's not ANT+.

Proprietary isn't so bad* as what matters is the quality of data (ANT+ head units aren't always all they are cracked up to be), but memory capacity is very limited on Polar head units, so don't expect to record more than a few hours at a time with 1-second recording.


* early model SRMs and Powertaps had proprietary head units which work well (IMO these are still the best choice for data integrity). Users of current models have choice of power meter's own proprietary head unit or the option of ANT+.
