Cannondale Silk Road - 1999

After stalling on a couple of projects (The Vetta and Colnago) this popped up on ebay.....have been fascinated for a while on getting a silk road and picked the frame up for $150....



Build so far

Dura-ace 8 Speed

Mavid rims on Coda Hubs

Easton Seat Post and Handle Bars

Flite Saddle

Just need to cable her up.....

What is the deal with that? Roadie with suspension?? I love the egg yolk yellow, but yeah, the riser stem looks a bit loopy. What colour bar tape?

Fair enough the bars and stem are a bit "how ya going" but that frame.....

Since I'm more of a mountain biker than Roadie I like the idea of a bit of suspension....

The head tube has an integrated coil 'Head Shok' shock absorber which can be turned On or Off by twisting the dial on top of the stem.
The shock is quite useful in helping to out smooth out the road similarly to the front suspension on a mountain bike. Tested out on the Paris-Roubaix (cobblestones). These were used on the road bikes as well as the touring bikes. The shock on these road bikes were tuned for road use, not fully suspended mountain bike use. When accelerating and climbing out of the saddle, you can lock out the suspension. Cannondale used head tube shocks for over a decade on aluminium frames to reduce 'road buzz'.

This one has 15mm of travel....

I can flip the stem but looking at a 5mm stem (these are specific to the headshok) on ebay right now....

I have a secret desire to find an old Cannondale frame too. Tours looks to be in pretty good condition especially for the price you paid. I was thinking about a 'flip' for your stem as well to make it more 'road'.

Yes, agree..... I've had a couple of Cannondale's over the last year but never happy with them....saw these in one of the old catalogs and thought "that would be the Cannondale to have"

Sorry, I wasn't dissin' the bike or your build, just thought that stem made it look kinda hybrid/comfort hubbard like.
Flipping it would be way too extreme in the opposite direction. If it rides as intended with the OG stem then all good.
Noticed one of these on evil bay at the moment, but kinda exxy on the $$$$
Probably a sound commuter bike?

I rode a Silk Road in London for about 6 months when I worked for a bike shop over there. Looking at the photos, I can't believe how skinny those fork blades are, but I think they are alloy? A pretty reasonable ride though, and the headshok did do what it was meant to.

Always wondered where they all went, but then again, they didn't sell well at the time.

Yes, they are alloy.....

I am happy with the ride....not much different to any straight cannondale I have ridden and not much more weight in the bike with the headshok.

The one on eBay does have a carbon fork, and a set of Magic Motorcyle cranks (which are worth a pretty penny if they are in good shape). I (surprise, surprise!) have a set of those that were intended for the SX800 build, but I had the Rivals so thought I would go with low maintenance.

Still, it is a little steep (and I am concerned about the sellers liver).

Yep, that was me.....

I was bidding on one but cant be bothered with a bidding war and thought I would just but it now for a couple dollars more...

If I had a spare $600 I would be tempted with the one on the bay.....but then again cant justify that since this one cost me $150....
