My solution ... I went out and got a 9 speed chain and 12-27 9 speed cassette that I am going to fit with a 9 speed Ultegra shifter I have lying round. 9 speed is ancient but much more reliable ( IMHO )... lets hope it works, if not it will just go onto the winter bike.

Um, yeah. I can see that now. A half chainguard may have limited the damage (for single chainwheel) but may have introduced other interesting problems...
