Track Wheels

Please excuse my lack of knowledge towards track cycling (I'm started to get into it), but im wondering if the wheels have a fixed axle? As in somehting like a un-removable quick release?

In attempt to make things clearer, the wheels im talking about is the Mavic Ellipse.

Quick releases are not allowed in track (unless they are securely taped to the fork leg). Track wheels require a tool for removal (Allen key, spanner, etc)

So theres a actual fixed axle connected to the wheel?

there are nuts on the ends of the axle instead of a QR

Just reviving this post as I just went through the options for converting an older quick release wheel to a track wheel.
If you replace the axle, you need new cones as the thread is different. Then I found skewers that do up with a hex key. They tend to be used on bikes so people cannot easily steal the wheels. But they are fine for the track and a lot simpler solution.
