Bike on Melb train (Vline - Ballarat)

Postby yolk » Fri Nov 23, 2012 6:09 pm

Planning to take the bike on the train into the city and from what I gather from the forums is that there's special compartment for bikes on the first and last carriage. Was just wondering how bikes are stored in there ? Are there bike racks or does one just lie the bike down on it's side ?

I've also noticed that most people take their bikes into the normal carriage on the weekends. Is the bike compartment only available on the weekdays ?

On the Ballaarat line you'll almost certainly be riding either VLocitys or Sprinters, neither of these types run to luggage compartments but they have areas set aside for large items. VLocitys should be boarded by the second door from the Ballaarat end, Sprinters by the door at the Melbourne end.

Have a look HERE, HERE AND HERE for more details.

It is marked on the doors of the train where the bike (and surfboard) storage spaces are. The are areas with a couple of velcro straps that will allow you to rest you bike against the outer wall of the train and rap a strap around the top tube to stop it moving around.

Just look for the bike symbol on the door and the rest will be very straight forward.

Thanks for the info guys. Yesterday morning was one of the worst time ever to try to get on the train, it was total chaos heading into southern cross. I did however manage to have a look at the carriage which has the bike sign and true enough there were Velcro straps to secure the bike in place.
