Here’s an older Peugeot that I have been working on for a family member.
Its been a slow project this one. Partly because I’m slow, but also for one reason or another there were a lot of things that we customised or modified along the way.
I might post later about some of those details, but the sun was out today so here's a few pictures of her all finished.
I like these old Peugeot mixtes, but I bought this one in particular because it had the nice lugs, which aren't so common. It was in pretty ordinary shape though, so its been pretty much a bare metal rebuild. Only the frame, forks and stem are retained.

The Peugeot was delivered to its new owner this week and everyone is very happy.
The decals were done to her design and colour choices and she's very happy with the end result, particularly some of the smaller details, like her initials in the ones at the top of the seat stays.
The stickers will come off the wheels too I think, even though they are mavic I think they look a little out of place.
The special request for it to be 'easy to pedal' generated a lot of changes. A 32T front ring, and a cassette with a 32T large cog. I already had a lovely long cage 600 arabesque derailleur, but it was still interfering on the large cog, so I had to make a longer hanger. I was worried about how it would shift, but pleasingly its really smooth.

After messing around with an old rack and a NOS one that didn't fit, I finally resorted to this. I hadn't brazed anything before so was a bit of a learning experieice and took ages, but mkII turned out OK.
Lots of polishing.

But the trickiest part for me was fitting the chain guard, I think its about 50's vintage and was all beat up so first I had to get it straight before painting, but then there were no brackets or mounting points and this also took me ages to figure out. I ended up making 3 brackets - which all started out the same as the derailleur hanger, follow by much cutting, bending, sanding, poshing.
Pleasingly the hammered guards fitted well - these ones are Electra Ticino from cambria, and the fit, finish and mounting hardware is really good.
Also really good are the tyres, GranCompe Ene Ciclo, the colour goes great with the bike, but also, and I don't know if I'm imagining it but they seem to roll really smoothly. I think I'll use these again in future.
That's one of the best mixtes I've ever seen. It's like mine, but you've done a much better job on it. Amazing.
One of the things I've been struck with riding my Peugeot (really it's the wife's but you know how it is...), is how nicely they handle. it reminds me of an old rigid mountain bike, with a sloping top tube. Really manoeuvrable and quick up hills despite the weight.
One question, how did you get the parts so shiny?

Yeah vaesk is right, that is what that picture of the pedals above shows, one as-bought and the other polished back past the anodising, on the bench grinder with a buffing wheel.
Absolutely, utterly magnificent. As always your attention to detail is stunning, beautiful work. You should bring something like that along to next year's Noosa L'Eroica, it'd be a shoe-in for best in show.

Cheers, despite having various projects on the go I only finish about one bike a year.
I can report that mum is super happy too. I dropped round there today and it hasn't been out of the house yet. I'm not sure whether she's planning to ride it or use it as a decorator piece!

Did you line the lugs? Perfection!
Yes I did, but I confess I've got a method that is a bit like cheating. I use tape to mask the outer edge. It's still very fiddly and takes ages and a fair bit of quickly wiping off mistakes etc, but it did turn out a good finish.

Beautiful job. Makes me kind of sad that I never got around to my Mixte project (had 2 almost identical Peugeot's, was going to do his and hers for me and GLW.) but at the same time I know I would never have achieved this type of result. Kudos to you.
