Riding home from work on Thursday arvo, I could hear the rear wheel rubbing the frame, strange me thinks, hop off to check it out. My first broken spoke
Fast forward to Saturday arvo, rear wheel off (the Aldi bike rack makes it easier) of course it's a spoke on the cassette side of the axle, off off with the cassette, mmmmm the axle is wobbling, no amount of tightening it will remove the wobble. My first broken axle. I'm stumped how that happened, the rear wheel isn't that old.
So two merit badges in one week. Total cost $2.50 spoke and $14.50 axle.

Looking at the total cost it appears that you have done the work yourself.
Merit Badges indeed!
Broken axles are usually related to impacts and stress rather than fatigue, so distance travelled isn't relevant. You might check the alignment of the rear dropouts, if they are not parallel they can put additional strain on an axle.
Cheers,
Cameron
