ta! one by Speedwell Popular frame that looks quite nice, one by not really sure what it is repainted (non original paint) , no Royal Speedwells there unfortunately.

The popular was mine until a couple of weeks ago .

Buyer said he was going to turn it into his beach commuter .

Maybe the ebay "Royal" is a Royal Superlite, or could be a Royal Olympic Track. The rear stays appear more upright, typical of a track bike. My 1938 Speedwell catalogue shows translucent green with cream as one of the colour schemes for both the Superlite and the Royal Olympic Track - this colour combo wasn't available on any other models - but only the Superlite had pump pegs on the seat tube. On the other hand the ebay "Royal" appears not to have a drilled bridge for a rear brake (it only has a front brake) BUT you could get it "equipped for the road with .......rear side pull brake..." Both were shown in the catalogue with the 3 pin chainwheel ( Williams??) - again this was only available on these 2 models.

Having said all that the Speedwell transfers are a later (1940s?) type than the 1938 variety, which had a much larger, and longer name in block letters (not slanted) which covered nearly half the downtube. Does anyone know when the later ( slanted) lettering came in?

I inquired about getting it back but it seems it may already be sold .

Hopefully if it has its to someone on here who can put it back together , hopefully if they see this they can ask him about the rims , they may well be on the other bike .

I dont think its a Speedwell... its been repainted and not by Speedwell so the paint work is of no help if it were (nothing on there is a transfer, its all sprayed via stencills)

Yep! dad got that green bike. $$$$$. but he is adament it is identical (sans some paint), he scraped the garish yellow off and the `rebuilder`s mark. (A penrith bike shop in the 50`s), my dad is 79yrs young.

Yes the the frame and forks were repainted. but only on all the lugs. The original paint is still on all the tubes, except the 50's ('Ross' Cycles, at Penrith.) repainted transferr. (very similar to other bike shops repainting marks from the fifties). After dad slowly scraped the the yellow off the the headstem, he was left with a royal cream (white) paint with a 'Grand black 'S' on the head stock. And the weight of the frame and forks is amazing, he has given them to his nephew to race Track. Whatever it is It is a speedwell. And the 'Popular" has been rebuilt, The last owner had no idea, the hubs had no bearings, and the bottom bracket had only 3 balls left either side. Will post a pic if anyone is interested.

The last owner of the Popular was myself who had acquired it from the original owner who bought it new .

The bike was left unrestored AND unridden waiting for a proper resto which I am glad has happened .

Do you know his name, or where he purchased the bike? The guy dad got it off rebuilt all the hubs and pedals, He just mocked up his Royal to get the attention. the 'Popular' is all complete again and admired daily.

An appropriate assumption Johnj after reading the comments of the thread but Munga is correct , just goes to show something unusual in previous comments.

You would see in my original listing that the bike was listed as a project bike .
