Kings Park Early Morning Riders

Postby Troy C » Tue Dec 11, 2012 5:14 pm

Ok, if ride in Kings Park on a Tuesday Morning between 5:30 and 8:30, you would have notice ATTA with Police and KPA approval close Lovekin Drive for a time trial. This is done 7 times over the summer months.
This morning I witnessed first hand how arrogant some cyclist are. When a approved "Road Closed and Detour" sign are up, would you drive through it?. then I ask the 5 cyclist, (not together) why would you ride through it and to cap it off, cut off a competing rider. It would have been disastrous if they had collided. Shocking is all I can say. ATTA will now look at ways of completely barricading each end, as my priority is the safety of the competing rider. Next week we have 2 Green Edge riders competing. Image telling you mates that you just T boned a world champ on your morning commute!!!!!!!

Saw that event on this morning and wondered what it was about.

I just followed the detour signs and had an enjoyable (if not incredibly sticky) ride regardless.

Some people really are twits.

Hardly surprising, it's just another road rule that plenty of cyclists consider to be for everyone but them.

Not sure if this is done already but I think most cyclists would respond better if as well as the road closed/detour signage there was a ATTA branded notice with "time trial in progress" or something along those lines as well.

Many people will just try and nip through unless there is constant activity around the barrier without a reasonable explanation of why the road is closed and detoured.

Yes, Along with the road closed sign was a sign saying caution Cycle Race, A sign saying event ahead and an orange sign picturing a bicycle race. It could not be more obvious and as I said to make maters worse, a cyclist went straight through while the "activity" was clearly on, riders almost collided.

I was wondering the same about the nature and signage of the closure. Question answered thanks. So it is hard not to go with the OP.

Yikes.

That's poor taste considering most people riding through Kings park to work will be "cyclists" rather than bike riders I'd imagine.

Sounds like some danger tape right across the road would be the go to protect the TT riders.

I've had people pull out in front of me on the PSP and that's bad enough let alone concentrating on going full bore and not expecting it.

On a positive note I've wanted to see this event in action and next week seems like the last possible end of commute into CBD chance to do it.
Any tips on vantage points start/finish line for the laps and sensible way obeying detours to access it by bike/trike?

I've marshalled and worked the rego desk more than I've ridden this course for a very good reason.
Hate. It.
Great atmosphere this morning, State's best, fantastic juniors and Orica GreenEdge Pros showing us how to ride.
Great stuff!
The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.

Is there a map showing the course? I'd like to have a go and see if it's worth joining in some time (if anyone is free to enter!).

I'm probably horribly slow compared to these guys but after bagging a bunch of KOMs/CRs on Strava recently I'm curious to see how well I'd do compared to REAL riders in a race condition :D
