Camelbak Podium Water Bottle - do they keep water cool?

Postby Ross » Fri Dec 07, 2012 10:00 am

Anyone here use the Camelbak Podium Water Bottles? Do they actually keep the water any cooler than a regular bottle? I'm thinking of buying a couple but only if they keep the water cooler, I already have plenty of normal bottles.

Yes they do keep liquid cool.

Best method I have found is to quarter fill them and put in the freezer overnight. I have put this to the test during trips to Adelaide during the heat at TDU time and has worked well.

Not thought the small bottle is the size of the biggest version in non insulated

I have run into problems with my normal drink bottles putting them in the freezer. I haven't got room to put them upright so have to lay them down and some times even though they are only half-full the water expands and splits the caps.

I was looking to buy the 710ml Camelbaks bottles that Cell bikes have on special at the moment.

Are you looking at getting the insulated ones? They really keep drinks colder.

We were able to get a silicon ice block tray (Ikea) where the blocks were long and narrow about 10cm long. We pop a couple in an insulated bottle filled with cold liquid and the double effect works brilliantly.

I've got 2 of the 'chill' insulated bottle they really do work. You can also pre fill it to 3/4 the night before and leave it in the fridge or freezer (has to be stored upright) and works really well.

The Camelbak's on cellbikes won't keep water any cooler. You want the Podium Chill ones.

i find mine are hotter but i think thats because i run the "smoke" color ones, plus the plastic feels thinner than most bottles. I would never use any other bottle now are the nozzle system is fantastic and as a result. I have thrown all my elite bottles out now....

The chill range of bottles are good, but just delays the inevitable on warm days... the freezer idea is a goo done if u have the space to stand them upright....

I am a big fan of CamelBak's Podium Chill water bottles and I find they work well. I wrote up a bit of a review which you can find here. I will be replacing them with the same or similar. No going back to ordinary bidons for me.

I was gifted one mid year and I really like it. Worked quite well last weekend on a ride with temperatures in the high thirties and kept various liquids at a drinkable temperature for over an hour.

Aye, drinking hot water in hot weather is the pits. For longer rides I take 2x Podium Big Chills. The night before I fill one near full and pop it in the freezer, and half fill and freeze the other. In the morning I top up the half full bottle with water which is drinkable straight away. This way I have cold water for many hours in hot weather.

I've got a couple of the Podium Chills and they do keep water cooler for longer, but they're not thermoses!

Podium Chill bottles are great. As said, they're not a thermos, but do definitely keep the water cooler in the warmer weather.

As a secondary good point to you Ross. I believe you're in the ACT and I bought mine in the middle of winter. I was sick of trying to drink almost freezing water, and there'd also be a chunk of ice in the top of regular bottles to go down when you needed a swig. None of that with these bottles. The water keeps some normal temp which is good for the chilly mornings.

Best all round hot/cold weather water bottle by far, and I'm about to buy another 2!

Regular Podiums are fantastic bottles. Highly recommended.

Podium Chill is a waste of money in my view. Yes, they can keep your water a bit cooler for longer, but it's really trivial how helpful they are.

Just take two bottles and fridge one and freeze the other.

The Podium Chill starts to fail as soon as you start drinking. Cold fluid is replaced by hot air as you drink - negating the benefit of them very quickly.

I love them... Fill them up with really hot drinks and they stay warm for quite a while ... Haven't had a frozen bottle yet this winter :-)

Not in my experience riding here in Perth with the temperature on the bike easily getting over 35 C most days over summer. Even on Monday at 6:00 PM it was still 35 C on the coast. So for me, based on my testing they work and I will be buying them again if I loose or damage one of the two I have.

Have 2 of the normal Podium ones which apart from the mouth piece is the same as any freebie drink bottle you can get from High5 or wherever else. Also have 2 of the Big Chill ones. To say there is no or trivial difference is complete bollox. Have taken one Chill and one standard Podium on a ride both filled with ice cubes and refrigerated drink. On a 30 degree day the normal Podium might stay cold for 1 hour whereas the Chill will stay cold 4 hours.

I have both and I reckon it's a reasonable amount of difference.
In my half hour commute the Chill will be "cold" at the end of the trip whereas the regular will be a lot closer to lukewarm!

I will only use the podiums and I have both the chilled and non chilled versions

non chilled are now my every day water bottle and I keep the "big" chilled for the rides They are fantastic and definitely keep water colder for longer, hours longer. One time after leaving it in the car on a warm day the water was still cool where as the normal bottle was warm if not hot

I love my Podium bottles. Does anyone have hot tips for stopping mould buildup in the mouthpiece though? It's so hard to clean in there and it gets a bit gross.
